The stock OS can be replaced with various Linux distros, or Windows XP, Vista, or even 7. The Windows install has to be heavily modified, and XP is currently the only version running near usability. Luckily, the device will boot from a USB drive. The GPS software is quite good and has integration with Google. The browser is based on Firefox 3.
