Ubuntu 10.10 is now only 10 days away.
details
The default picture manager is being replaced by something that's actually good, the software centre is having a "For Purchase" section added to it, and Netbook users should try out the Ubuntu Netbook Edition to enjoy the Unity interface designed by Canonical for these small screens. You don't even need to mess about with your Windows installation in order to try it out. You can run the installed from within Windows, and it will simply be moved aside to make a little space... I've had some Ubuntu installations for a while, but I'd like to walk around with a full install for various reasons.
details
I therefore need a laptop recommendation. Some prerequisites: a) Out-of-box Ubuntu install compatibility. No driver issues for _any_ of the subsystems on the machine. b) Required network connectivity: Wireless-N, Bluetooth, Gigabit Ethernet. WWAN (Gobi or 3G) a plus. Required port connectivity: 2 or more USB ports, VGA and/or HDMI, audio I/O (digital I/O a plus). Docking port a plus, SD reader a plus, firewire a plus - but not required. c) SSD storage, or easy upgradeability to SSD, a must.... Read more →

What's the best laptop someone can buy for under $500 to put Ubuntu on?
details
Alright, let's say I have a budget of $500 USD. What is the absolute best laptop I can buy to put Ubuntu 10.04 on, netbook or not? What is my use case? Anything really. Let's say it will be my travel computer. So sure, maybe smaller is better, but I currently travel with a 15" MacBook Pro, so I'm not opposed to that size. Bonus points for using gdgt links.

Ubuntu is hands down the best OS available on the market.
details
I've used OSX and Windows 7, and the only reason I would ever use either is because there aren't enough applications for it. Ubuntu is more than capable of running modern apps even better than Windows 7 or OSX, but nobody bothers writing them because there isn't a big enough market. And because there aren't enough apps, not many people use Ubuntu. It goes in a loop and the only reason Ubuntu is gaining users is because it's so amazing - even without a giant solid base of... If you hate the button placement to the left side in the new window system, you can change it back. This is linux of course.
details
Howtogeek.com posted up instructions here: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/13535/move-window-b... If you change the button ordering, it's going to look a bit weird. You can fix that by changing to a different window theme.

Ubuntu 10.04 is THE OS for your netbook.
details
I could never use Ubuntu as my main machine, since I'm so reliant on Windows apps like Office (back when I was in school) and now Zune, so I would install it on my ASUS EEE 1000HE (http://gdgt.com/asus/eee/pc/1000he/). Up to 9.10, I always felt that it ran a bit too sluggish for me to stick with it and I would eventually just go back to XP or 7. Right now I have the beta running on my netbook and it's runs a lot faster. I'd say that overall performance matches Windows 7, with...

Metacity Controversy
details
This controversy with Canonical choosing to put the window controls on the left side of the window might seriously force me over to OS X. Scrapping 15 years of UI/UX work that has been burned into our souls isn't going to go over well with your average user. Sure it's just a one line change in gconf, but the mindset behind it just blows me away.
