Conclusion: We like it

If the megapixel arms race has ended, the superzoom one appears to have only just begun. The latest round clearly goes to Canon, for the 35x zoom lens on the PowerShot SX40. The camera also supports HD video, with full zooming capabilities while shooting. Image and video quality are good for a compact camera, though the camera suffers from shutter lag. It's also bulkier than many compacts, though still smaller than most DSLRs or mirrorless interchangeable-lens compacts. If you're looking for a camera that will let you zoom in close, and you're not ready to upgrade to one of those, the PowerShot SX40 is a good choice, especially now that it's available for under $340.

The Canon PowerShot SX40 HS offers an impressive 35x zoom range, fast continuous shooting, and very good image quality. You won't be able to fit it into your pocket, but this megazoom can capture telephoto images that a smaller camera couldn't dream of.

In terms of design and features, it's very competitive. Photo quality is a little better than most of the cameras in this class. Where the SX40 lags a bit is in terms of performance, manual controls, and movie mode.

Image and movie quality are both decent, the 35x optical zoom has a huge range that few other models can challenge and the optical image stabilisation system is also top notch.

If you’re considering a mega-zoom, the SX40 HS is a slam dunk. We can’t be any clearer: If you’re in this neighborhood, buy it. The camera takes fine photos, is loaded with nice features, has cool filters and takes quality movies.

As an amateur tool the PowerShot SX40 HS cuts the mustard and is great fun. But we would only unconditionally recommend it if you can find a street price that shaves a decent chunk off the manufacturer's price.
