While the Canon G1 X's big imaging sensor means it can shoot sharper, more detailed images than the typical compact camera, that's not enough to justify the G1X's high price. For $800, you can get a good DSLR or mirrorless interchangeable-lens compact camera (like the Sony α NEX-5N, which we recommend) that will give you much more flexibility, and equal, if not better, image quality. And if you're looking for a great compact, Canon's amazing PowerShot S100 is both cheaper and much smaller than the G1 X.
