Hey guys, I'm looking to purchase a mid-range to high-end DSLR, and I know absolutely nothing about the cameras, brands, or photography itself. Let me make this clear though, I will learn. I don't do anything halfway, so please don't be concerned about how advanced the devices may be, or how high the learning curve is. That said, what makes the difference when you folks purchase a camera? Are there reasons behind brand loyalties in this sector? How about lens ecosystems, how important are those?...

What say y'all about the future of the Powershot G line? I had been expecting the launch/announcement back in September after passing on the G12. Now September has passed, I'm starting to wonder what happened.
If they do decide to continue the line (which I very much hope they do), I'm kinda hoping at the very least for the following features: - CMOS sensor - Electronic viewfinder - Better wide-angle (at least 24mm?) - Wider aperture (at leat f2.0?)
However, some noise is present even in moderately well-lit shots, but only really noticeable when the images are enlarged. The ability to zoom while recording video is a long-wished for feature in point and shoots. The motor has a slower, quieter mode of operation while recording. The image stabilization is also astonishingly good. I had a hard time taking blurry pictures when I tried. Haven't played with any of the specialty modes like smart shutter, high-speed burst or movie digest yet. A...

I've met a number of random people in my trials, tribulations, and travels who happen to own a Canon S90 or S95 as their primary point and shoot camera. Whenever I find out they have that camera, I want to do a secret handshake, or fist bump or something with them. Something to let them know, "hey buddy, we're of the same kind!" I know there are people around here who have some issues with it. But for its portability and capabilities, it just can't be beat. They even fit...

The digital age came and I put down my camera and was unhappy with point and shoots generally... but suffered through my first canon SD and then got excited about my second that shot 720p video... then i wanted to take pictures for real... my buddy sold me this and there were 3 things I miss but can live without. 1)Live view on the LCD 2)Video mode. Still a solid camera and god did I miss this form factor.
easy to use with so many setting for a Pro in compare to panasonic LX5 (i intent to buy it)..but i take S95 it is more compact and cheaper but not good quality for shooting clips of movie.. for a pro user looking for best quality image it is the best choice
I got it to fit easily in my pocket when I don't want to carry my SLR, but since I bought it in 2009-ish, phone cameras have really come close to the quality of this thing. To be fair though, this camera does shoot video and not just the 30 second mini clip you get on a lot of phones. --It's not HD though. I've had a lot of other cameras that lasted longer before becoming obsolete, but that is more the pace of the tech industry than Canon's fault. You could do worse that this...

Haven't bought a camera since, but I definitely plan to. It took good quality photos but was definitely bulky. It also runs on AA batteries. Horrible battery life.
Just rooted my old IXUS 70 using the ROM from http://chdk.wikia.com - now my camera shoots RAW, and lets me zoom while shooting video! Awesome new features. Install is not for the feinthearted though, and may void the warranty. But hey, it's out of warranty anyway, right? Big ups to the CHDK guys.
I'm not a professional photographer, but I am thoroughly enjoying taking photographs and have found the Canon 50mm f/1.4 to be a joy to use. I'm quite interested in the 85mm prime but the mid-range lens, the f/1.8 doesn't offer the same sort of aperture to be found on the 50mm. Is it worth the extra cash to go for the L series f/1.2 lens. Of course I'm sure that you'll get more than just a wider aperture, the glass quality must be excellent, but it is a big jump in price ($358 -> $2,049). I'd...
This is a long read. Feel free to respond to the title question without reading. My wife and I got an HP Photosmart C4795 something or the other that was on sale at Best Buy 2 years ago. It's the one with the gold/bronze trim and it uses HP 60 ink. It has been a headache from week 1 but, we hesitate to get something else in the same price range to be disappointed again. We are both in grad school, and need to print out papers, journal articles, scan articles, and copy forms. I liked that the HP...

My lens broke and I have considered upgrading my Rebel XT with the Rebel T3 or possibly the T1i.
The standard kit lens 18-55, is around $150. The thing is the T3 but it's down to $420 on Amazon, a complete steal. I want to eventually move up to a more professional SLR but I am a senior in college with a very limited budget.
By quality, i mean actual *print* quality doesn't have to be great. I don't print often, and when I do print, its like a concert ticket or something that still requires paper proof. Ideally, I'd like a printer that is the size of the Neat Company's single document scanner. Even if it only printed black and one sheet at a time, then I could store it. So- does anyone have a good suggestion for something that exists now that is close? Hopefully under $100, but willing to pay a bit more than $100 if...
It's the time of year for picture and video taking. I'd love to hear how others, especially parents and hobbyists, set up their systems for uploading, editing, sharing, viewing, and backing up their photos and videos? I'm a little all over the place. I did recently buy a WD drive that will share my media across several computers and, ostensibly, over the web. I'm on Flickr and just started using Picasa Web Albums. I'm more interested in sharing and viewing than backing up. Are Flickr and Picasa...

I've got a Nikon D40x currently from quite a number of years ago. Is it too outdated and should I start getting into photography by getting a new body first, or should I just get a few lenses to play around with first?
Hey guys, I'm looking to get a DSLR in the $600-700 price range for Christmas, and it's very important that it can take good 1080p videos. So now I don't know wether I should go for the Nikon D5100 or the Canon 600D. Of course shooting still images is also very important. Any recommendations?
So I walked into Best Buy all set to drop down some benjamins on a Nikon 3100; and the sales guy talked me right out of it... I want to make this into a serious hobby and he stared me clear from any beginner setup from BOTH Canon and Nikon. So... now i'm one confused shopper with a lot of research. Can you guys go down the list of the major difference on a high end DSLR like the Nikon D7000 and the the beginner setups from both top dogs, Canon and Nikon? Bare with my questions please. I know I...

People have very different opinions on what the best all around lens is for a DSLR. What do you think? What lens would you choose if you could only have one? For myself, I'd go with a 50mm prime (80mm prime when converted to full frame), or Canon's 24-105mm L lens that I wish I owned (http://gdgt.com/canon/ef/24-105mm/f4l-is-usm/). I like using fixed focal lengths because it takes more thought and effort to compose a shot. Obviously using a zoom gives you a lot of added flexibility but I get most...

Pretty sure I'm going to get the T2i, mostly for video recording. But now I'm torn between buying it with the 18-55mm kit lens, or buying the body and a 50mm 1.8 lens separately (as I've heard its great for video). Thoughts?
My old inexpensive Canon 8400F was a great scanner — flatbed for paper, negative holder for film, and it also had software that let it double as a copier. It only did 4800dpi, but that's enough for my needs.
But the drivers aren't Lion compatible, so I'm shopping for a replacement. And the major scanners like the Epson V700 are expensive, in the $500 range. Any bargains out there?
So I've been mulling over this for some time. My NEX-5, which is my only interchangeable-lens camera at the moment, is decent. It takes some good pictures in my limited hands, although I'm left often wanting a viewfinder for the sort of picture-taking I do use it for. And to be honest, the vast majority of my picture-taking is done by my compact cameras. So the Sony comes out for 'proper pictures' - such as they are - and I've started to think that I can probably tolerate a bigger camera without...

I've narrowed my search for cameras down to the 550D or the D5100. I went through the reviews on DPReview and they both come very close to each other. They fit my needs and my budget perfectly so I'm ready to just order one of them. Before I do this though my last thing to check into is why someone might choose Nikon over Canon or the vice versa. For those of you who have used both or went through the same process why did you choose one over the other?
Basically looking for something that will take decent shots on auto, and maybe allow me to teach her a bit about ISO to improve some stuff. But nice shots on auto/easy to use are most important. I was looking at the Canon S95, and am beginning to think that might actually be too complicated.
