What is the best beginner DSLR with high image quality and possibly video?

I have a 900 ish budget and I'm looking for a good DSLR with good image quality and video capture. I don't care about size, weight, megapixels or any of that other stuff. Video is a secondary thing, I don't NEED it but it would be nice. I'd also like to be able to upgrade easily later. I've been looking at the Pentax K-r as a possibility but DP review seems to think the Canon 1000D would be a better choice. It doesn't have video, i know, but it is a good bit cheaper. As a prospective camera buyer with a budget of about $500, I'd like to know what the best entry-level DSLR would be for a relatively inexperienced camera…

Through the research I've done, I've seen the Canon Rebel XS, the Nikon D3000, and the Sony Alpha A330 mentioned as the best in this particular price range, but it's hard for me to value what the best features and/or interfaces are for someone most acclimated to the mid-range point-and-shoot type cameras. As a quick note, I'd also like to mention that I do want a DSLR, so recommendations of point-and-shoots available in my price range simply won't be productive.... Read more →
