Conclusion: We like it

The VivoBook S400 is a good, affordable Windows 8 ultrabook, with a bright, usable touchscreen. PC Mag was impressed by the S400's "high-performance processor, large amount of storage, touch screen, and above all its sub $700 price," and said that it "far outperforms ultrabooks priced at the $899 or above." TechRadar also liked the S400, calling it a "beautifully appointed laptop for the money." The S400's biggest downside is its battery life, which tops out at about 4 hours. While many touchscreen laptops have less-than-ideal battery lives, the S400 underperforms many of its competitors. However, if you don't need all-day performance, the S400 remains a very good laptop for its price.

The Asus VivoBook S400CA-UH51 is one of the least expensive ways to get a fully functional Windows 8 ultrabook. It's a touch-screen ultrabook that gets the pricing and feature set right.

You get a decent 14-inch laptop package in the Asus VivoBook, especially given that it has a touch screen, but it doesn't add up to anything particularly impressive that you can't get elsewhere either with better design or for a lower price.

The ASUS VivoBook S400CA is a Windows 8 Ultrabook that offers a touch screen and a slim and light design for an affordable price, but the battery life could be better.

If you’re put off by the slew of new form factors and radical designs emerging with Windows 8, the Asus VivoBook S400 wraps the new operating system up in a comfortingly traditional package.

We are disappointed by a few aspects of the VivoBook S400C: notably the battery life and touchpad gestures, but the overwhelming sense is that the S400C is a very good laptop. It doesn't break the bank and doesn't provide unnecessary expensive hardware.

The display isn't perfect, but a touchscreen, powerful specs and superior build quality easily make this the best-value Ultrabook we’ve seen.
