Detailed review
This was my first mp3 player; well, I did have that hacked together car mp3 player crammed in my truck, so, maybe I should say, this was my first PORTABLE mp3 player.
Prior to this baby, mp3 players were small capacity and you loaded them using a PARALLEL cable (ugh!). Here I could fit most, if not all of my mp3s onto a single device and use the extra storage as, well, extra storage.
The thing used four AA batteries...REAL BATTERIES! I spent the money for some quick charge (15 minute) batteries and never had to worry again.
Also, if you were willing to void your warranty, you could remove, if memory serves, four screws and replace the 2.5" PATA drive. I upgraded mine to a 40GB within weeks of its purchase.
I upgraded the OS to Rockbox (which I believe is still live and kicking on numerous devices these day) and was in mp3 heaven.
Time passed and my brick-like beauty was surpassed in style (and size) by those damned iPods. Eventually, I retired the Archos Jukebox 20 in lieu of a used 4th generation iPod, but those years we spent together were magical.
