Poor performance, short battery life and a bad speaker already make this a tablet to avoid. But most shocking for a supposedly child-friendly device are its lackluster parental controls, which is this 7-inch tablet's claim to fame.

We can't help thinking that there's a huge gap in the market for a good tablet with a child-specific OS that's designed for kids yet easy for a parent to control. The Archos ChildPad, however, isn't that device - and Android isn't that OS.

The Archos Arnova ChildPad claims to be an Android tablet designed for children. However, its kid-friendly optimisations don't go far enough to make this palatable for a young crowd. Android is not as accessible as the iPad OS, and the ChildPad does nothing to change that.
