When the battery died in my 1st generation Apple remote I decided to buy the new model instead of replacing the battery. The functionality is the exact same in the 2nd generation remote with one additional center button that acts as a pause/play button.
The size and weight of this remote feels great to hold and the aluminum construction feels more solid than the previous plastic model.
If you are fine with your 1st generation remote, however, there is no reason to upgrade. Wait until you need a new remote and get this one. The $19 price tag seems fair, but they should really be including these with new computers.
