Some more software reviews are welcome
details
The software reviews on gdgt are very limited: only desktop & mobile operating systems get reviewed and scored like any hardware gadget on the site. The more I browse the site, the more I feel it only focuses on hardware.
There are lots of desktop software / applications that can be reviewed: ranging anywhere from security (anti-virus, etc.) to personalisation applications (like RocketDock and the likes).
I also feel like many software reviewing sites are broken: they take money from the... Read more →

Should Notification Centre in iOS and OS X have a "Now Playing" widget?
details
Firstly notification centre is great for, well, notifications, but the iOS version also has "widgets", such as stocks and weather. I think a new widget addition should be "now playing" which would show you the album art, title, artist and album of the currently playing track. Given how quickly you can check the weather, or how your stocks are doing, it seems ridiculous that in order to see all that information, you need to swap to either iTunes or Music, to see that. Sure, you can see the track... Read more →

Can Aereo finally be the company to disrupt TV and bring cord cutting to the masses?
details
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/08/aereologo.jpg
If you haven’t heard of Aereo before it’s probably because they’re a new company focusing on the New York metro area but it’s something you should be paying attention to. Aereo is a company that is taking over-the-air (OTA) broadcasts*** and making them available to you from anywhere via iPad, iPhone, Safari on Mac, AppleTV and Roku (Android, PC and additional device support coming this summer). From the Aereo press... Read more →

Unix/Linux embracers (X11/homebrew/gimp <= 2.6/etc.) beware!!
details
Note, some of this was "public" information, but not things a lot of us have time to pay attention to. For me, they would have kept me from purchasing it.
1) X11 - Gone. No, not an option, no longer included from Apple - you have to download XQuartz (http://xquartz.macosforge.org/landing/) manually and install it. On it's face it's not that big of a deal, but it's stepping away from the NetBSD/FreeBSD roots which drew me to OS X in the first place. To elaborate : I'm needing to build 2.8 as 2.6... Read more →

10.8 vs 10.6
details
I have a 2010 27'' iMac that's still running Snow Leopard. The reason I chose not to upgrade to Lion was because I legitimately couldn't take it seriously. To me, it seemed fit to run on an iPad, or maybe an 11'' Air! Not my iMac, which I needed for serious tasks like Java development and photo/video editing! However, this is getting out of date and I will be buying a 15'' Pro, which will come with 10.8. Any thoughts about how this works for more serious tasks and not just social networking?... Retina Display for the MacBook Air: ETA and Practicality
details
The MacBook Pro 15" w/ Retina display was just released. The display is fantastic, but it isn't yet on Apple's more accessible notebook. The MacBook Air is an easier choice for many by being a combination of (relatively more) affordable price, great form factor, long battery life, and sufficient computing power for everyday needs. Apple will likely keep all those characteristics in the brand so the Retina display for more consumers may take a little more time.

This generation of computer users will be the most divided over touch/mouse+keyboard interfaces
details
From the way Apple is infusing more and more iOS components into OS X and Microsoft going full force with a tablet friendly UI while retaining the traditional desktop UI in Windows 8, it's clear that we're in the transition period from going mouse+keyboard based UI to a finger based UI.
For people that are little younger than me and older (probably for people in 9th grade and up today) I'm convinced that we're probably going to be unanimously more resistant to the eventual change on how we... Read more →

Did iMessage usher in the beginning of true synergy??
details
Earlier this week Apple announced the arrival of their new OSX build called Mountain Lion. One of their heralded new features was the introduction of iMessage to the desktop platform with the idea being simple: 1 conversation continued across any of Apple's hardware be it iPod touch, iPad, or iPhone, with iMessage you will never stop the conversation.
I myself downloaded the beta of iMessage and tested this out first hand, I had my iPad, iPhone, and MacBook Pro in front of me as I carried on in... Read more →

Can we all thank Apple for (partly) ruining the Hulu Plus business model?
details
It always bugged me that Hulu only allows TV playback if you've subscribed to Hulu Plus. That sort of defeats the whole watch-it-when-and-where-you-want idea. But thanks to AirPlay Mirroring in Mountain Lion, I can just watch something on regular Hulu (Hulu Zero?) and mirror it to my Apple TV. Thanks Apple!
Sidenote: You know that feeling when you say a word enough times and it starts to look like a nonsense word? Well I actually just had to Google "hulu" to make sure I was actually spelling it... Read more →

What Happens to Group Video Calls and Screen Sharing in Messages and Facetime?
details
Curious if anyone out there who has experimented with the Messages Beta can tell me what is happening with video conference calls in Mountain Lion. Is a Facetime upgrade coming in Mountain Lion as well?
I ask since I use video conferencing and screensharing in iChat with all of my family members for our weekly calls and also for my "tech support" situations. We relied on iChat in the past for this simply because of its ease of use. I didn't have to try to get my family to setup a Skype account...

Ivy Bridge MacBook Pro
details
I'm curious, since Apple announced that OS X Mountain Lion will ship this summer, does that also mean we should expect the Ivy Bridge MacBook Pros at that time? Would Apple refresh the product line and then ship Mountain Lion after? I guess since they use an all App Store distribution now, it doesn't really matter.

Thoughts?

It's official: as of Mountain Lion, the "Mac" in the OS X name is no more.
details
Just got word back from Apple HQ, and it's official: Mountain Lion is the first release of OS X to not use the "Mac" designation.
Ultimately that doesn't mean a whole lot -- iOS is still what's powering Apple's portable devices (and the Apple TV), and OS X is still Apple's one and only desktop OS. In other words, it's not like dropping the "Mac" from OS X is any indication of some bifurcation on the desktop (or an impending licensing deal to 3rd parties) that would necessitate a name change. I... Read more →
