Long-term usage experience: good, bad, shortcomings?
I'm a long-term Linux user considering switching back to OS X (some of the Linux-based software I administer only works on Enterprise Linux anyway, so I'm already running them in VMs; and it'd be nice to be able to test cross-platform software on all three platforms). I don't see the appeal of the (dated) non-retina MBP, and agree with the consensus that the 13" rMBP is priced rather uncompetitively, which leaves the 13" MBA (11" is a bit too small for development work).

CPU power...on par with the original Mac Pro?
According to MacTracker, latest i5 Air has the same processing power as the 2006 Mac Pro, dual-processor quad-core work station. Actually, the numbers are much bigger in Air's specs.
MacBook Air i5 1.8: 6105
Mac Pro 2x2.66 ('06): 4833
Mac Pro 2x2.8 ('08): 7685
I'm a fan of these benchmarks and every Mac that goes through my hands spins a bench or two. I remember that '06 Mac Pro scored 6.6k score and '08. 11.3K. I'd say my results are a real life compared to the ones at MacTracker, but nevertheless,... Read more →

Ready to geek out on pixel densities? Great, me too.
So when Apple announced its first computer with a Retina display, the revamped 15.4 MacBook Pro (http://gdgt.com/apple/macbook-pro/with-retina-dis... I think we all instinctively drew the conclusion that one day every Apple computer model -- like the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch before them -- would have a Retina display. Pricing the 13" Mid 2012 Macbook Air
I have my early 2011 Macbook Pro 15" 2.2 i7 machine on Amazon to sell. What I want to trade it in for is the just announced Macbook Air 13".
I am wondering should I go for the baseline with the 128GB HD or the upper level model with the 256GB.
Basically its a difference of $300.
I have about decided just to stick with the base model and possibly offset with iTunes match and an external HD to carry around if I really want all of music files. I would basically treat the Air as another appliance such... Read more →

Retina Display for the MacBook Air: ETA and Practicality
The MacBook Pro 15" w/ Retina display was just released. The display is fantastic, but it isn't yet on Apple's more accessible notebook. The MacBook Air is an easier choice for many by being a combination of (relatively more) affordable price, great form factor, long battery life, and sufficient computing power for everyday needs. Apple will likely keep all those characteristics in the brand so the Retina display for more consumers may take a little more time.
