Is the upgrade from Snow Lepoard to Lion making your mac slower?
I purchased a Macbook Pro 15" with 2.53 GHz and 4GB of ram. It is almost exactly one year old, it was purchased late august 2010. I upgraded to lion, and now the OS is running slower for me. Is this happening with other people?

desktop vs loptop productivity
Just got home from the uptown mn apple store. I went in to look at the 13" MacBook pro I made my way over to the decktops. I should say that I have been thinking about a desk for a bit. I was looking at the $1500 with the 21" display nice! Now as school nears I'm thinking will I be more productive with a desktop? I have a Asus 1201 e with a ssd and I'm typing this in bed on my thive. But I want all the nice things apple has. What are your thoughts how do you work best at home or at work is it...

Does Mac OS X require less powerful hardware to run smoothly than Windows 7?
When comparing MacBook's and PC laptops of about the same tier, the specs of the Mac seem to always be much lower. (For example - you'd be getting 4 GB of RAM whereas 8 GB is the norm for the tier of computer.) Is Apple just being cheap or does their OS actually require less beef to run properly (not talking about minimum requirements). In an "apples to apples" comparison (in this case Apple to PC), would a Mac run more smoothly than a PC of the same hardware?

What do you do when your machine runs hot?
I used to have a 17" MacBook Pro and most of my friends are also designers and they have fallen into the Apple trap. The number one complaint I hear about MacBook Pros of any size: heat. They always run very hot. So, since Apple refuses to deal with the issue through design, what do you do to keep your computer (and yourself) cool?

Impending MacBook Pro refresh: Would you be happy if it lost the optical drive?
It looks like Apple is going to be refreshing its MacBook Pro lineup sometime in the next few months and the rumor mill is filled with speculation on what a future MBP will be like. Many are thinking Apple will go the MacBook Air route: significantly thinner, no optical drives, SSD drives. From the my personal perspective, here are ports and peripherals on my current 15" MBP that I don't really use: • Superdrive: I haven't burned or ripped a CD / DVD in ages. It's kind...

Lovin this as a dual drive setup with HDD for large media files and replaced the super drive with a SSD for OS, apps and configuration files.
It fully boots in 16 seconds as do virtual machines on it.

I removed Flash from my system's plugin folder:
It's pretty astounding how much it has improved performance in Safari and Firefox. Both of these browsers now rarely exhibit the dreaded spinning beach ball of death. They are actually fairly usable. As an added bonus, a lot of annoying flash content, such as advertising, isn't even displayed. It's pretty nifty. I do slightly cheat by falling back to Google Chrome if I need to use Flash (since it has it built in). But once I'm done, I simply close Chrome and the resources...

Using Windows 7 in Boot Camp on MacBook Pro (2.53 GHz, 4GB of RAM) -- things are SLOW.
Alright, in my desperation to finally play Civilization V, I went ahead and installed Windows 7 in a Boot Camp partition on my MacBook Pro. This means, that for all intents and purposes, my laptop becomes a Windows machine when I reboot the computer and enter Windows 7. So, my question is, with a computer that has a dual core 2.53GHz processor, 4 GB of RAM, and a 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT video card (maybe that's the problem?), why is my computer acting so damn slow? It takes a good 3 -...

How do you keep your laptop clean?
I know the Apple stores use some sort of cleaner to wipe down their laptops and keep them looking spiffy. They even cleaned my laptop after dropping it off at the Genius Bar. Anyway, it's starting to look pretty grimy and I'm wondering what the best way to clean dirt and smudge marks from anodized aluminum is? Just some water and a rag maybe?

For those using multi-display setups with a laptop, what is your layout like?
I'm looking around the gdgt offices and noticing a few different things going on here: 1.) Myself - using a 24" display as my primary monitor and my 15" monitor off to the side as a secondary monitor. 2.) Seth - using a 15" MBP as primary, and 20" as secondary. 3.) Jon - using 24" as primary, 15" MBP as secondary. 4.) Evan - using 24" as primary, 15" MBP as secondary. 5.) Aaron - using 15" MBP as primary, and 24" as secondary. I like to use...

If I do a clean install of OS X 10.6 using the disc that came with my laptop, will garage band, iphoto etc. be pre-installed?
In other words, is the software that is bundled with the laptop but normally does not come with OS X on the install disk that comes with computer?

Who is the go to company for gaming laptops now-a-days?
I'm currently shopping around for options on a new laptop that may offer some type of gaming ability. I'm not looking for anything heavy duty like Crysis but I'd like to be able to use Steam & Starcraft 2. I know at one point Alienware was the go to company but I recall reading that they weren't as reliable as they once were; which would be a bummer because you can get i5's & i7's from the dell outlet for under 1K (so one as low as $750). I was considering a...

Wiped my computer clean this weekend and reinstalled Snow Leopard -- it's running fast now!
This is something I've been meaning to do for awhile now, but I finally formatted my computer and installed a clean version of Snow Leopard. After transferring over my Documents and Pictures folders, plus reinstalling apps (basically an entire day process), I'm back in business! This machine runs silky smooth! The difference is night and day between the old install (which I hadn't really done a fresh install from in over 2 years or so -- just transferred or upgraded new OS's...

I'm getting closer and closer to throwing down for a new internal harddrive for my MBP.
What's your favorite hard drive and why? Ideally, I'd *love* to run an SSD, but I don't think the capacity and price are there just yet. So I'm probably going to go with a platter. In that case, I'm thinking something in the 500GB range, maybe setup a bootcamp install for Windows 7 with some of the extra space. Anyway, if you were to get a new hard drive for your laptop right now, what would it be?

Benchmark comparisons between the Core i5 and i7 models.
I'll put these links here for reference if anyone else wanted this info like I did. Results seem to suggest that the i7 has somewhat significant performance increase for number crunching, but the i7, and increased GRAM on the i7 model does not improve graphics performance much if at all.
