Detailed review
Screen (9/10) - In my opinion this has to be the biggest improvement on this MBP over the unibody Macbook. Apple claims that the gamut has improved by 60%, while I have not tested this the improvement in contrast and viewing angles is definitely there. The LED screen is instant on and very bright. The only knock againts the screen would be the option for a higher resolution.
Keyboard (10/10) - The same chicklet keyboard Apple uses on all its products remains here. Nice feedback and feel to the keys and having the keys spaced out makes typing easier. The biggest improvement on the keyboard is the inclusion of back lit keys in the base model. This is a nice touch considering many people paid the premium and bought the higher end Macbook just for that feature alone.
CPU, GFX, RAM, HDD (8.5/10) - The CPU has gotten small bumps in both models. I have the base model and also a base 2009 Mac Mini. I do not really notice much improvement in processor speed but the bump is still nice. Both models still use the Nvidia Geforce 9400M which is a nice integrated graphics solution. RAM remains the same at 2GB DDR3 on the base model but jumps to 4GB DDR3 on the higher end. Finally both models keep the same size HDD's. I think Apple could have bumped the HDD and RAM up more on the base model and also on the HDD on the higher end model.
Build Quality (10/10) - Simply put this is the most solidly built notebook I have ever used. The fact that the latch on the bottom has been removed, makes the feel even more seamless and solid. Cant find any knocks against he build at all.
Battery (9.5/10) - Everyone may not agree on the non-removable battery but I think its great. I never removed my battery on my old DELL so I could put in another. With average use (web surfing, email, Youtube, documents, IM, iTunes) I am able to get 6.5+ hours all the time. This is great for school when your not sitting next to an outlet during a lecture. Only knock I could find was that you have to send the notebook to Apple to replace a bad battery, you cant do it at home.
Ports (8.5/10) - The introduction of a SD card slot is long overdue. No more dongles or attachments. Firewire is back and this time in 800 form, great that Apple changed their minds and put Firewire back on these models. 2 USB ports, headphone/audio out port, kensington lock, and superdrive round everything out. The SD card slot would be better as a multi-card reader and 1 or 2 more USB's would be nice.
Overall Package (9.3/10) - The 13: Macbook Pro is a great machine that can fit all types of users. Apple actually listened to its user base and made some nice improvements. This is what the 13" unibody Macbook should have been and thats why I jumped on this one when it was releases. That being said its not perfect, more ports would be nice along with bumps in HDD's on both models and a RAM bump on the base model. Overall the build quality, improved screen, amazing battery life, and cohesive package between hardware and software make this the best 13" notebook Apple has ever released.
