Remember the old days, when Linux was a nightmare to run on a laptop because half the hardware would not be supported and you would spend days in vain trying to make it work? While those times seemed like a thing of the past for a few years, my recent experience installing Linux on some laptops made me feel as if I had been time warped back to the Linux Dark Ages. It all started when I had to give my trusted Lenovo T61 to a student whose laptop had been damaged in a recent fire on campus. I had...

I was hoping Apple would release iLife '13 today. Based on iLife's release history, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ILife#Releases_and_hi... today would have been perfect. Any speculations on when they might?
The MacBook Pro 15" w/ Retina display was just released. The display is fantastic, but it isn't yet on Apple's more accessible notebook. The MacBook Air is an easier choice for many by being a combination of (relatively more) affordable price, great form factor, long battery life, and sufficient computing power for everyday needs. Apple will likely keep all those characteristics in the brand so the Retina display for more consumers may take a little more time. Web and Apps At the moment, much of...

I used to live in Google Reader but more and more I'm finding myself never opening it up anymore. I've tried using Feedly or Flipboard and it does make it better but ultimately I always end up with hundreds of unread items a day to the point where I just mark everything as read ( yes I have cleaned up my feeds numerous times). I recently tried out Caffeinated to see if I could get back into using them but again the massive amount of news was always overwhelming so I would just mark everything as...

From the way Apple is infusing more and more iOS components into OS X and Microsoft going full force with a tablet friendly UI while retaining the traditional desktop UI in Windows 8, it's clear that we're in the transition period from going mouse+keyboard based UI to a finger based UI. For people that are little younger than me and older (probably for people in 9th grade and up today) I'm convinced that we're probably going to be unanimously more resistant to the eventual change on how we...

Earlier this week Apple announced the arrival of their new OSX build called Mountain Lion. One of their heralded new features was the introduction of iMessage to the desktop platform with the idea being simple: 1 conversation continued across any of Apple's hardware be it iPod touch, iPad, or iPhone, with iMessage you will never stop the conversation. I myself downloaded the beta of iMessage and tested this out first hand, I had my iPad, iPhone, and MacBook Pro in front of me as I carried on in...

I was wondering what you think of the rather new PhotoStream service. I've been using it quite a lot (or trying to) - and I don't like it very much so far. It simply doesn't work well for me most of the time. For example, last night i got back home from a two days trip and imported all my DSLR photos into iPhoto (about 200 RAW photos). These are supposed to "immediately appear on all my devices". About 15 hourse have passed since the import and only 70% of the photos appear in my PhotoStream (my...

I have a class coming up starting January 5 I will need widows 7. I use a Mac and do not want to use 7 but most of the work will be done learning the lower levels of the Microsoft OS. I have been planing to use VMware or Parallels. My Question is I don't want Window open all the time and I do not want to slow down my mac with windows in the background. I would like to have it open on a 2nd desk top using lion. Can I do this with out full integration just have Widows running on the side? How will...

I jumped on the Lion bandwagon when I got my 4S for all the iCould compatibility. But after a month or two I've found that I don't use Mission Control (I liked expose better), and launch pad is useless, since I keep all my mostly used apps in stacks or quick launch with spotlight. And all the auto syncing of things to my phone is done by iTunes wirelessly. Theres a few other beefs I have too, but their minor. I never had any crashes or anything, but I just feel like Lion is more unstable. I do...

Have you been able to register for iTunes Match? What do you think of it, so far? Has it lived up to your expectations? What sorts of use cases do you see with it?
I'm thinking of trying it out tonight when I get home (and can hook up my full library of ~20K songs).
So when iTunes Match was first released as a developer beta I was very skeptical that it had any actual value. (http://gdgt.com/question/what-is-the-point-of-itunes-match-fu5/) I think the reason that I was confused was because Apple hadn't settled on the exact implementation of it yet. When it was first announced they were almost aggressively non-specific when talking about the details of how it would work, and from what I've read it's even changed a bit since the first developer beta was...

I got iOS5. I chose to Sync with iCloud rather than to Sync with iTunes. This means, information that was already on my phone via my BACKUP will be thrown into the cloud, which can then be thrown back DOWN to my iPhone. --Right now iTunes will not allow iCals information for the purpose of sending it to my iPhone. I can only get the Calendar events that were previously on my iPhone. This sucks. What I cannot do is allow any collaboration of that, with iCal, and Address Book. You just have to pick...

I'm about to write you all a book. Read it and love it, OR! just read the title, and answer. Post brought to you by zfwp (http://zakkforchilli.wordpress.com) iOS As of right now, to change your "theme" or Graphical User Interface (GUI)—you have to jailbreak your iOS device and download another third-party application. Almost every phone / Mobile OS I've ever used and almost every phone / Mobile OS I've ever heard of, seen, studied—has had the ability to change the look and feel of your general,...

So 10.7.2. came out this morning alongside iOS 5 and I go to set up iCloud so I can take advantage of Find My Mac. I tell it that I don't want to sync mail, contacts, calendars or bookmarks because I don't use Apple Mail and have all my stuff stored in Google's cloud. Anyway, I get the final screen telling me what all is synched up to iCloud and Find My Mac is there, but also Documents & Data. I didn't tell Apple I wanted that to sync. So like any likeminded person would do, I uncheck it. I...

According to an engadget article, Microsoft has announced that they are going to an App-store only model for Metro style apps in Windows 8. This means that all Metro style apps will have to go through microsoft for approval, distribution, and (I believe a yet to be announced) cut of the profit. In reading and responding to comments, it seems that there is a significant amount of confusion over what this means, and its impact. So I wanted to break down some key points here. -- You don't need one...

I'd say I'm surprised there's no iBooks for Mac yet, but Apple seems to not take obvious courses of action fairly frequently, for reasons that are sometimes never known. Why do you think Apple hasn't released a version of iBooks for Mac? I wouldn't think the cost of porting the iOS app would be that high, so the only reasons I can think of are that they either think it would be a bad business move for some reason, or they're completely rewriting the app to provide some amazing new desktop...
I purchased a Macbook Pro 15" with 2.53 GHz and 4GB of ram. It is almost exactly one year old, it was purchased late august 2010. I upgraded to lion, and now the OS is running slower for me. Is this happening with other people?
