Creating symbolic links with OSX and Dropbox, good or bad?
details
I decided to try and move away from storing some stuff locally to putting everything in my dropbox folder. This is mainly document focused as music and pictures don't need to be with me all the time. My idea is to point /documents and /downloads to folders inside of /dropbox with symbolic links just to create a more seamless approach. Is there any downside to doing this that I'm overlooking or should I be set once I create the link?

Is there any way to see the transfer speed of files over AirDrop?
details
I'm transferring a couple files from one computer to another using AirDrop and I'd like to know if there is an easy way to see:
  1. Amount left to transfer (Estimated time and file size)
  2. Amount transfer so far (file size)
  3. Speed of transfer
The closet thing to any of these that I've seen on my computer is the ring around the other computer in AirDrop. I also read this post( http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/6_tips_and_t... ) that says I can see the download bar in my Dock, but... Read more →

Is it time to replace my late 2010 Air 11" with the new gen?
details
The current machine is fine (no damage whatsoever), but the 128gb storage requires me to delete/move files often. Looking at upgrading mainly to get the 256gb (BTO) version. The better performance is also welcome. The 1.4ghz C2D & 2gb RAM aren't exactly blazing fast. Not sure if it's just me, but I noticed significant performance drawbacks since the upgrade to Lion even after a fresh install. What makes me think twice is money's an object so I want to keep a laptop for at least 2 years. If I... Read more →

Is it safe to delete iCloud Photo Stream files from your Mac?
details
As you probably already know, when you enable Photo Stream from your iPhone (or other iOS device) it begins to automatically upload your images to iCloud, and then streams them back to your other devices. It works pretty well, definitely a great feature of iCloud.
On the Mac, it saves all these inbound Photo Stream files at ~/Library/Application Support/iLifeAssetManagement/assets/sub/
Like many (I assume), I enable Photo Stream in iPhoto to import the latest pictures from my stream into my photo... Read more →

Auto mount network shares in OSX?
details
Is it possible to mount network shares in OSX similar to how you might with Windows and mapping network shares. I noticed once I connect to the share it shows up automatically in finder but it'd be nice to not always have to remember to create the connection.
I know in Linux you can mount a share to a folder but when I tried to view the fstab on Lion I got the following message "This file does nothing, contains no useful data, and might go away in
future releases. Do not depend on this file or its... Read more →

Software to Database your movie library (Blu-ray and dvd) ?
details
I was just wondering if there is a good software that would allow me to create a database of my blu-ray and dvd movies. Some of my movies have been already archived using handbrake and so forth. The software that i am seeking actually would prevent me from buying a movie twice :) .

With Lion, is it possible to use an external display with a MacBook, leaving the clamshell open, and having nothing on the MacBook's display?
details
It's possible to do this in Snow Leopard by waking up my MacBook with the clamshell closed (with an external display connected) and then opening the clamshell. However, in Lion, opening the clamshell when the MacBook is awake activates the MacBook's display. Is there another way to turn off the MacBook's display? I'd like to know because I need to leave the clamshell open in order to get reliable Wi-Fi reception in my room, and I don't want to waste VRAM on the MacBook's display.
Edit: There...

What is the best equipment needed to convert old family keepsakes to digital?
details
My family has a small collection of several-hundred photos, dozen videos from old handicams, and audiotapes I want to transfer to iPhoto libraries & MP3 files.

What would be the best equipment setup for this project? I am willing to spend a couple hundred bones. Preferably things compatible with OS X.

Which touchscreen monitors work with a Mac Mini?
details
I'm looking to transition a Mac Mini from being a HTPC to a kitchen computer. It looks like you can get a decent 20" touchscreen monitor for under $300, but I'm not sure any of them work with OS X. I know touchscreen drivers for OS X are available for sale at http://www.touch-base.com/ but I'd rather not spend an additional $210.

Problems getting your iPad 3rd-gen to sync over wifi?
details
I was having some really annoying issues with the new iPad, primarily that I couldn't get iTunes to see the device if it's wasn't connected with USB. All the proper settings were set (I'm pretty sure) and iTunes already recognized my iPad 2 and iPhone 4 just fine over Wifi.
The problem went beyond iTunes, as well. I was also unable from the iPad to see any other device on the home network, meaning Remote, SplashTop, AirVideo, etc. wouldn't work. I tried everything I found on every forum out... Read more →

Apple TV 1st gen not connecting to my Mac anymore
details
I am not sure when this happened, but at some point my Apple TV simply stopped showing up in iTunes. I am using OSX Lion, fully updated, and the Apple TV is also fully updated (there haven't been any ATV 1st gen updates in a long time mind you). Without connecting of course, I can't transfer any content to the ATV. The ATV still works for content already on the HD, still accesses the web, etc... It has no operational flaw itself, it just can't get to my iTunes library.

Automatically clear Spotlight search-text after selection?
details
I press command+space to open Spotlight, and enter something like an app's name. Say "Safari". I press return to launch the top-hit (Safari). Spotlight closes and Safari comes up but if I open Spotlight again, I still see the "Safari" text. Spotlight is continuing its search! I know how to manually clear it fast (escape) but I'd like it to clear automatically. Anyone know how to do that?
