Mac OS 8.5 is a bit of an orphan OS. Its system requirements preclude running it off a 100MB Zip disk, and if your system couldn't run 8.1, it probably didn't use a Zip 250 drive either. It had decent compatibility, and decent stability, but a good amount of software requires Mac OS 9, making it...

8.5 and 8.6, pretty much the best of the pre-OS X Mac OS versions. Very few drawbacks, and almost any Classic software runs on these versions of OS X. 8.6 is more stable.
