Detailed review
I bought a Nano 2g 2GB about 2 1/2 years ago, just a while after the release date. I had not owned a MP3 player previously and the iPod Nano 2g won me over to the iPod side of the MP3 contest. Since buying it, I have also purchased an iPod Classic 6g 80GB.
The iPod Nano 2g is a great device in a few ways. Firstly, the exterior is simply stunning. The aluminum body is highly resistant to the scratches and fingerprints that the metal backs of new iPods seem to invite and also is very durable. I have dropped my iPod more than a couple of times but it's still chugging along in top notch condition after more than 2.5 years.
The second thing the Nano 2g has going for it is its beautifully designed software. The ease of use of the Nano's, not to mention most of Apple's products, interface is mindblowing. Even someone who had never owned a MP3 player before (myself) was able to navigate through the various menus without the slightest hint of difficulty. Not having to play detective to do what I wanted was a huge benefit for me.
The only con of this device is the release date. Inevitably, the Nano 2g has been updated twice since its debut. The Nano 4g plays video, has a new audio chip and also possesses an accelerometer, which are a few of a host of features that have been added within the timespan of 3 years. If you are looking for the latest, cutting edge gadget, look elsewhere. But if you just want a great mp3 player for a reasonable price, consider the Nano 2g.
