The iPod mini 2G is still a great simple MP3 player if you want an easily hackable and upgradable device. Simply replace the original and outdated HDD with an ATA compatible CompactFlash card and then re-format the device. Mine currently has a 16GB CF card in it, but I might try to upgrade it...
