Bad battery life in iOS 5?
details
Since installing the public iOS 5 release on my iPhone 4 and iPad 2 earlier this week I've had my battery completely drain out on both devices overnight (which rarely ever happens -- usually only if I leave on a location app or something), and tonight I noticed it was sucking down juice quickly as well.
I ran a stats app which showed me that my phone was operating steadily at 90%+ CPU utilization, which seemed really odd to me. I rebooted and after it came back up I explicitly started no other... Read more →

Some thoughts on this week's Apple announcements
details
So, the rumors weren't true.
New-iPhone-mania was kicked off earlier this year by a big story purporting that the 2011 iPhone wouldn't, in fact, be a "spec bump to the iPhone 4" (which we now know it is), and that the device would be a "completely redesigned handset" with a "teardrop" shape with a "swipe area," and potentially also inductive charging.
There were also stories that another prototype iPhone handset was lost in Asia this year, which led to all the speculative case designs we saw... Read more →

Slowing mobile innovation?
details
I don't think I'm alone if I say that, compared to 2010 with its breakneck pace of innovation in the mobile industry, 2011 has been a bit of a let down. It seems almost hard to believe now, but at the beginning of 2010, the most advanced phones on the market were the original Droid and the iPhone 3GS, and the tablet market didn't even exist yet.
Yet by the end of the year, Google had become the dominant mobile OS, Apple had launched both the iPhone 4 and the iPad, HP bought Palm, and Microsoft... Read more →

Can Apple afford to do an "iPhone 4S"?
details
Apple's iPhone event is coming up on Tuesday and still, no one is sure what the company will announce. The device we've been hearing rumors about, the iPhone 5, is supposed to feature a redesigned unibody aluminum, larger screen, upgraded internals, and other relatively major changes. However, there are also rumors of an "iPhone 4S" which is supposed to be look just like the iPhone 4 but have upgraded internals.
My question is this - can Apple afford to do this "iPhone 4S" just as they did with... Read more →

Do you think the Facebook app will be announced at the next Apple event?
details
October 4th doesn't seem too far away, and I'm guess Apple wants it out by years end to please customers. They don't love Facebook, but at least it's better than having Eric Schmidt not that stage. Also, do you think that this will be the first mobile app with the new timeline and music features?

Here's what I want in a third party browser in iOS 4 and iOS 5
details
A number of third party browsers have been developed and released for Apple's iOS. Despite the requirement that they must use WebKit, most of the browsers have executed some pretty interesting ideas and provided a lot of enhancements over the basic Safari browser found in the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
Some of the browsers off the top of my head:
  • Atomic Browser
  • Dolphin Browser
  • iCab
  • Mercury Browser
What I would love to see is them offer some extra enhancements that would seriously make me switch.... Read more →

Microsoft goes to App-store only distribution for Metro. Why isn't everyone upset?
details
According to an engadget article, Microsoft has announced that they are going to an App-store only model for Metro style apps in Windows 8. This means that all Metro style apps will have to go through microsoft for approval, distribution, and (I believe a yet to be announced) cut of the profit.
In reading and responding to comments, it seems that there is a significant amount of confusion over what this means, and its impact. So I wanted to break down some key points here.
-- You don't need one... Read more →

Photo from a rumored iPhone 5 emerges from Apple Campus
details
Earlier this morning, a photo of a plate of sushi allegedly taken with an iPhone 5 from the Apple campus in Cupertino was posted to Flickr.
Full photo w/ EXIF available here: http://cl.ly/2g3r2h2S002S0M0V2l0b
According to PocketNow, "this (very attractive) photo claims to have been taken by an iPhone 4, but the rest of its EXIF data tells a different story: although the image has been cropped to 2235x2291 (5.12 megapixels), the original picture was a much larger 3264x2448 -- or just shy of eight... CNET is reporting that Apple has lost another prototype iPhone in a bar. Thoughts?
details
Some interesting news has been reported this afternoon: "In a bizarre repeat of a high-profile incident last year, an Apple employee once again appears to have lost an unreleased iPhone in a bar, CNET has learned. Last year, an iPhone 4 prototype was bought by a gadget blog that paid $5,000 in cash. This year's lost phone seems to have taken a more mundane path: it was taken from a Mexican restaurant and bar and may have been sold on Craigslist for $200." "Apple representatives contacted San... 34% of iPhone owners think they already own a "4G" device.
details
I've been reading about this interesting study this morning that asked a random assortment of phone owners whether they were going to eventually get a 4G device and whether or not they already had them. Roughly 34% of iPhone owners said they currently had a 4G device. The study goes on to conclude that customers are confused about what 4G really is. This is something I've seen a number of times -- though I wonder if it's a case of mistaken identity. On buses, cafes, or even in the Apple store,... Read more →

Is the cloud a ploy to get you to buy more devices?
details
I've been giving iCloud some thought lately and I realized something about the whole concept of having the cloud push content down to your devices. Are companies like Apple simply trying to make you buy more of their devices and get deeper into their ecosystem (aside from the obvious benefits of storing data in the cloud)? What I mean is, there was a point where it seemed as if everything was on one device that you carried around and all you really needed was that device (ex. iPhone). Most... Read more →

The iPod app has left the iOS building
details
One of the things I noticed almost immediately after loading up the iOS 5 beta on my iPhone 4 was that for the first time since I got the iPhone 1st-gen back in 2007, my phone didn't have an iPod app looking back at me from the home screen. Not unlike the iPod touch and iPad before it, which use separate "Music" and "Video" apps for playing back synced media -- the iPhone has finally dropped the "iPod" app. Ultimately it doesn't mean a whole lot since all the functionality is still there (albeit... The quick camera mode in iOS 5 seems to significantly speed up the camera.
details
About two weeks ago, I was complaining about how sluggish the camera was on my iPhone 4 using iOS 4. This week, Apple announced iOS 5 and shared a new feature: a quick camera mode, which can be accessed by double clicking the home button while locked. Interestingly enough, if you use this mode, it seems to load up the camera super fast. Definitely faster than opening the camera app from the home screen! It's been pretty damn nice. Another added bonus -- if you password protect your phone, you... Read more →

Some iCloud features started rolling out a while ago
details
Go to Settings -> Store and you will see a new menu asking you what do you want keep in sync with the cloud, you can choose music, apps and book. I just tried it between iPhone and ipad and it works perfectly, I purchased an app and an album from the iPhone and it was automatically downloaded on the iPad, the album was also downloaded on my iTunes but not the app. Also a new tab will be found in the iTunes and App Store where you can see all the music and apps you have purchased before.
