Detailed review
I find that I can get real work done on the iPhone 3Gs browser without the fear that Safari will crash in the middle of getting work done. I bought the 3Gs the day it came out and to date I have never had Safari crash no matter what I am doing. That for me is worth the price. I also love the speed of opening large databases on the 3Gs. I have noticed that menus and new screen come up noticeably faster yet the iPhone 3G is by no means slow especially compared to Windows Mobile phones. The ability to shoot video and good photos is a nice touch as taking a picture is all about the camera you have and the iPhone is that camera. The pictures and video do look good for a cell phone. This phone will get a lot better after AT&T fixes their network and allows MMS, Tethering, and upgrades to the 7.2 Mbps network. I love the extra storage space as I now feel that I have enough storage that next summer when it is 64GB that will not convince me alone to upgrade.
Some problems with the device include the lack of ability to start a podcast via voice control and the ability to use voice to start playing a specific song. Also when you start a genius playlist via voice control the song starts over which is irritating. I will say for what voice control does it works great for me at least. I do wish I could say something like text Zack or email Zack and it could set up an email with the correct address already entered. The digital compass is not the most accurate and sometimes show me driving sideways down the street. No common inbox for email is still a pain and overall the email application could stand to improve. Also the fact that I cannot check my email or surf the web when Pandora is running is a real drag as I feel that any audio application should be able to play in the background just like the iPod application. Push Notifications are nice but still not great as OmniFocus still lacks the ability to popup a notification when a task is due. I have had a few overheating issues but only when using the mophie Pack Air case. I think battery life could be better yet it is no worse then the iPhone 3G. I will say that the biggest problem with the iPhone 3Gs is AT&T. AT&T is blocking every cool feature that could be on the iPhone including MMS, tethering, Sling Box video, etc. AT&T must upgrade their network and should have already been prepared for MMS. Also 3G is so sparse that you can not rely on having a 3G network. AT&T FIX YOUR NETWORK NOW!! Also better customer support is a much needed improvement. Remember AT&T's motto. "We're not happy till' your not happy."
Overall the iPhone 3Gs is just slightly better then the Palm Pre yet I will leave the iPhone if by next summer Apple does not overhaul the notification UI and allows background applications. (Unless someone creates a usable Mobile Office suite with a Bluetooth Keyboard which is the only thing I miss about my Dell Axim X51v and Axim X30)
