Detailed review
Buy the iPhone if:
- you want to play games and download random apps
- you want to be trendy
- you dont mind re-charging it every few hours
- you dont need your emails instantly
- you dont type long emails from your smartphone
- you dont need on-the-go chat functions ie AIM or gchat
- you like to SAY you have 3G, but actually dont.
Dont by the iPhone if:
- you actually plan on using email
- you actually plan on using phone
- you actually want 3G connection
- you need a phone that stays charged for more than a few hrs
The iPhone gets all the media hype, but for its category of a "smartphone," it certainly did not live up to its promises for me.
The iPhone best suits people who do not actually plan on using this device as a power device, where you plan on using it for emails, chats, applications, web surfing, and overall business use.
TRUST ME, I TRIED SO HARD to like the iPhone, I even waited for the 3.0 software update. But it does not have push notifications (well... its starting to roll out slowly). It does not run background apps. It does not have a reliable 3G connection. I never get my emails on time like I used to with Blackberries, esp since the iPhone does not have push email.
Before you say, Microsoft Exchange! Well, let me tell you, it's nowhere near as good as the Blackberry. As for gmail, it pulls emails every 15 mins, and sucks battery life. As does anything else you do on this. If you are on the phone, writing an email, txting, checking Google Maps, and surfing web - as I needed to when I was trying to sell a stock that was plummeting, the battery will die in under an hour. Even when I use it lightly, I need to recharge it every 6 hrs.
On the pro side, it does have TONS of (useless but fun) apps. Apps that I sometimes buy or get for free... that get old in a matter of minutes. I usually stick to the few games I always play, like solitaire or FlightControl... but other than that, I hardly use any of the dozens of apps I so eagerly downloaded.
Also on the pro side is Google Maps. It has the BEST Google Maps that I have used on a portable device. That is... IF you actually can get a 3G connection. And one caveat - it really doesnt work well in Manhattan... but everywhere else, its great.
Lastly, the touchscreen. I do love the pinch and zoom... and it DID just get Copy Paste (the state of the art tech... like 20 years ago). But the keyboard, or lack thereof, has driven me insane. The auto correct feature has made me send numerous txt msgs and emails full of jibberish. Plus, whereas I could type around 100 words a minute on my old blackberry, on the iPhone, I type as fast as molasses moves.
Conclusion:
If you need a device for real power use, DO NOT BUY.
If you want a fun phone with games and apps, BUY.
me? i'm going to buy the blackberry tour on July 12.
cuz i actually NEED my emails instantly.
not to mention BBM - the best messaging service known to man.
