Detailed review
I've had my iPhone 3G for just over a year- well, I've had AN iPhone for just over a year. I'm actually on my 3rd one. Not because I'm abusive to my gear. I baby my phones. I got several years of service out of a Nextel 560i, and had my Samsung SCH-A930 through Verizon for the entire 2 year contract without a scratch.
Initially, the iPhone was, for me, fantastic. My wife was having all kinds of connectivity issues right out of the box. Dropped calls, bad connections, late text messages. I on the other hand had no problems. Then 10 months into the contract the tables turned. I noticed that my connection would switch from wi-fi to 3G to EDGE and back again while sitting on my coffee table. I started having horrible connectivity problems. Lots of dropped calls, e-mails not being fetched or pushed, text messages taking sometimes 3 attempts before being sent. Finally I broke down and took the phone back to the Apple store. The man at the Genius Bar connected it to a diagnostic and the answer was "Huh. That isn't right. Let me just replace this one." Seems I had somehow worn out or otherwise rendered inoperative the modem and radios within the phone. Over the month prior to my going to Apple, there had been 70+ modem resets. I was told that average was 10 or so.
With new phone in hand I left. It wasn't until I got home that I noticed something strange. When I would look at the screen, I saw that apps were spontaneously launching and closing. The text screen would switch from the main list to compose and back again. I took that one back the next morning and was given the phone that I currently have. I told the person who helped me the second time that this would be my last iPhone.
Now I am experiencing lag when switching screens, even poorer connectivity but with excellent cellular coverage. Apps sometimes are slow to launch or close.
Overall do I like my iPhone? Yes, I do. No device is perfect and I realize that. But I would have to say that given the hype that Apple laid on this one, it hasn't lived up to it. As I told them at Apple, if this one craps on me, I'll be headed across the parking lot to the AT&T store and getting some other handset.
