Happy Birthday, iPhone!
details
The iPhone turns 4 years old today. Crazy! It's kind of amazing to go back and read some stories written when the iPhone was first released. One of the articles I remember vividly for some reason is when it won Time Magazine's Invention of the Year in 2007. Lev Grossman summed it up by saying something like "this only hints at the future of iPhones -- think of how amazing it will be in 4 or 5 years." In fact, here it is: "It is but the ghost of iPhones yet to come: the iphone has sold enough... Read more →

How to disable voicemail on AT&T (with an iPhone).
details
If you're anything like me, you're no fan of voicemail. Well, I've finally killed mine, and if you're an AT&T user (specifically of the iPhone) here's how you can do the same, and what you can expect. First up, you're going to have to call AT&T. That sucks, I know, but from what I learned it appears that iPhone voicemail is bound to your data plan, so it can't be easily removed with a mobile dial code (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_dial_code ).... How Apple dodged a bullet
details
Also published in the gdgt newsletter, sign up at http://gdgt.com/newsletter/ Five years ago there was plenty of speculation that Apple was working on what turned out to be the iPhone, but what a lot of people have forgotten is that there were also reports that they were going to create their own Apple-branded wireless network. Or more specifically, that they were in talks with Cingular (now AT&T) to lease network capacity and become what’s known as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator, or MVNO... Read more →

Apple pushed out iOS 4.0.2 today to fix the PDF exploit used by the jailbreakme crew.
details
The crazy thing about this is that since Apple didn't develop iOS 4 for the original iPhone and the original iPod touch, these devices are effectively unsecured and vulnerable to the PDF exploit made famous by Jailbreak.me. In theory, a malicious user could use the same exploit for more nefarious purposes and totally own your phone or your iPod. It's kind of a bummer that Apple won't continue to push a security update for a device that's only 3 years old.

Anyone notice cell service is flakier than usual after jailbreaking?
details
This is something I feel like I've noticed back on my iPhone 3GS and now my iPhone 4. After jailbreaking the phone, I really feel like the cellular radio software is much more finicky -- it potentially seems to crash a lot more. The only way I can quantify this is that I notice the bars seem to reset more often, that is to say, the go from 4 - 5 bars of service, to 1 or 0, and then back up to 4 or 5 after about 30 seconds. It could be observer bias on my part, since I'm much more...

Google claims "Apple is rewriting history." Are they? The story seems to go both ways.
details
I keep seeing people claim that Apple is wrong about Google's foray into the world of mobile phones - simply because the iPhone was introduced in 2007, while Google purchased Android in 2005. However, it seems like most people making this argument use some sort of logical fallacy. "Introduced" does not mean "started working on." (To be fair, Steve Jobs is making the same fallacy when he says that Android was released after the iPhone.) According to the following Wired... Read more →

The greatest gadget upset for me lately has been the death of the Microsoft Courier.
details
There have been so many products released lately that have piqued my interest, from the iPad to the EVO... but the iPad is just a biggie sized iTouch, and the EVO well when it comes down to it, it’s just another phone. The Courier WAS something new, it was something exciting. Through the rumor mill and the rampant speculation that is the Internet my interest and inherent excitement for the device skyrocketed. I have an iPhone, I love it, but the iPad just was not what I really wanted in a... Read more →

GPS via Bluetooth?
details
Howdy, I am still happily using my first-gen iPhone. I also own a Bluetooth GPS logger. Theoretically, since the 3.0 firmware, someone could write an iPhone app that accessed a GPS logger via bluetooth, thus giving the first-gen iPhone GPS capabilities. There used to be software that let Palm PDAs do this. Does anyone know of such an app for the first-gen iPhone? Mikael

Wallet Case?
details
I've never used a case for my iPhone. I've just kept it alone in my left front pants pocket. Case History (pun intended): With my first Palm Pilot I had a belt case with a belt loop (NOT a clip). It worked great for about four years until it wore out. I I've had several cases since then, belt holster and pocket with folding or flip lids and have been generally disappointed. What's wrong with having a good secure holster with a belt loop? With all of belt cases I've had after... Read more →
