Best apps for backing up iPhone call logs, SMS, and other iOS user data?
details
I've been using iOS since back in the day when it was called "iPhone OS" (i.e. 1.0 - 3.0), and I recently realized that I've never done a full manual restore of my iPhone system state. Everything I've got on my device(s) have been carried with me through successive backups and upgrades and each new iPhone release since 2007. Call me crazy, but there's got to be a lot of junk in there gumming up the works. (For more on that topic, see this awesome thread on bit-rot:... Read more →

Have you used "Whited00r" on an old iOS device?
details
Apple (and many other hardware manufacturers) often leave their early adopters and those using older hardware behind when they push out new operating system updates. One particularly sore point is with mobile devices. Those still using the original iPhone or iPhone 3G cannot run the latest builds of iOS 4 (and soon, iOS 5). However, there is apparently an option for those of you yearning for new software. It's a custom firmware build called Whited00r. I've actually never heard of it until I just... Read more →

Do you ever regret getting rid of your older "game-changing" gadgets?
details
I know I tagged this post with a few Apple products -- but this can really apply to any gadget. Recently, I was reflecting on this though. I sold my 2nd-gen iPod (which was the first Apple product I ever owned and started me on the long, sad path to Apple fanboyism) to a coworker a few years ago. In hindsight, I kind of regret it. It was a 20GB drive, monochrome screen, and I think I sold it for ~$50. But I remember when I first set my hand on it, how awesome and incredible I thought this device... Read more →

i just got an iphone first gen from somebody on craigslist and i already have a sim card and i want to just take it from my phone and put it in the iphone but…
details
when i do that and plug up the iphone. it asks me for billing information. i think that this might be something to just varify that the sim card wasnt stolen and tryin to be put in a different phone. but it also might be another activation and cost me something or just put a bunch of fees and charges on my bill. will that actually happen or is it just a security thing? if it will cost anything. what might it cost?

Was the iPhone a surprise, like the iPad?
details
I understand that everyone knew that both of them were coming for a long time, but when Steve Jobs introduced the iPad everything he showed was something the public had not seen before. The iPad only appeared in two spyshots, that came out the DAY BEFORE the announcement, were blurry, and the design of the iPad was obscured. I was not as into tech as much back then (my obsessions heightened a lot mainly that year), so what I want to know is, when Steve Jobs came out at Macworld 2007, had the...

I recently got a used iPhone 2G off a friend. When I got it, I used the "Erase content & settings" feature or whatever it's called.
details
It went through its looooong progress bar thing, then rebooted. The Apple logo came up, then after a little bit, the progress ball (I don't know what else to call it, it's a little spokey wheel, lol) appeared directly the Apple logo. Didn't move AT ALL, just sat there. Frozen. I thought "hey, maybe it needs to think a while", so I let it sit while I made dinner. I came back, it was STILL THERE. I watched it more closely, and noticed it was "restarting itself"... Read more →

Menu settings for mail/contacts/calendar not appearing
details
I've got a 1G iPhone that I updated to OS 3.1 a couple weeks ago. Everything works fine, except when I went in to change my Exchanger server sync settings I realized that the menu option for "Mail, Calendar, and Contacts" isn't appearing under Settings. Anyone seen this before? It syncs just fine with the setup I had before (Google Sync to my personal gmail account) it's just that I can't access the menu to change that to sync with my new Google Apps account. Is this...
