Criteria Comments Rating
  • Features The variety of tasks that can be performed using the in-built and downloadable apps is limited somewhat by the lack camera/gyroscope and the pre 4.0 OS. good
  • Display High quality capacitive panel that's only downside is being released so close to the iPhone 4's retina display that it seems low-res in comparison. good
  • Battery life Surprisingly strong, though conversely seems to take a long time to charge. good
  • Ease of use No comments good
  • Storage capacity Should hold all your music, apps and images but the days of 160gb+ devices seem to be mostly behind us, which is a shame given its strengths as a movie player. good
  • Design and form factor Trim and stylish, but lacking obvious clues on how it should be held. The absence of a pop-out stand and the highly scratchable rear mean accessories are a must so-so
  • Portability (size / weight) Slender form-factor makes iPad infinitely stowable, though the materials used may make you wonder what condition it'll be in when you arrive at your destination good
  • Durability Best buy a case on day one if you plan on using this anywhere except in bed. Scratched aluminium/broken glass won't get you much interest when eBay time comes. poor
Detailed review
Overall an incredibly appealing and fun to use leisure device, notable more for it's innovation than for productivity. iOS 4 should be a real boon come the autumn, though by then a hardware revision could be only a few months away.
