Detailed review
I came to the iPad having already used an iPod touch since it was released, so I had a very clear idea of the uses and limitations I would be getting with the iPad. I suspect if you don't have a clear idea of how you're going to use it initially it may seem more like a toy and there are clearly things a laptop can do that it can't; however there are many areas where I have found the iPad the ideal tool - whether these will justify the price tag for everyone if, of course, open to question.
I have tinkered with computers for over 20 years and have always been a bit of a command line junkie but I was clear that this was not where the iPad was going - I think Apple have, as with the iPhone, thought of this much more as an appliance than a computer - I.e. It works reliably and doesn't take an expert to use it. I am sure that this locked down approach will frustrate some potential users and the lack of flash does restrict the browsing experience which will also put some off. It might have been nice if the device had been less tied to a main PC too band the lack of multi-tasking (at least until iOS4) can be annoying but if you can get used to these elements the device itself is very useful in lots of areas, although most of these put it in the luxury category for sure!
I only have the WiFi version so can't comment on the 3G but have found the connectivity to be quick and reliable and the battery life pretty much as claimed. The browsing experience is good although some sites don't work properly. The screen is crisp and the touch responsive and intuitive. It is great for personal video watching, sharing photos, email and browsing and the range of apps is starting to grow and add more and more to the usefulness of the device.
Outside the screen is certainly difficult to read in direct sunlight and whilst it does get very grubby this doesn't seem to affect the direct viewing too much in other lighting conditions. The speaker is surprisingly good too.
As to accessories - I found the dock somewhat pointless - especially if you have the case as you have to remove it from the case to use the dock at all - plus the dock is portrait only. The Apple case I have found very useful but it does show dirt and marks very easily and dirt accumulates around the edges of the screen too but it provides a reasonable amount of protection, the ability to angle the device for viewing and typing and is not too bulky.
Overall I have been very pleased with my iPad but your mileage may vary...
