I own the nexus 7 and the ipad mini and I go for the Nexus 7, overall is a better product. The weakest point for the mini at least for me is the display,processor speed and the freaking price!
The good part is that my ipad mini was a gift :)

yeah, even as a gift i don't think I'd use it if I owned a N7. For iOS stuff, I think it's better suited to iPhone/iPod Touch.

If you feel the iPad mini display is poor the unit may be defective. I have used the mini for a few days and think the display is very good and that's after months of using the 3rd gen retina iPad.
