Putting things in perspective... In 2008, Microsoft sold 1.32 million tablets at a starting price of more than 2x that of the starting price for the iPad.
details
That number (1.32 million) is dropping and I don't know what the number was before that, but I do know that when I WAS seeing Microsoft tablets was way back in 2005, so I would guess the number was even higher before 2008. The iPad is surely a success, but it's still in the same order of magnitude as the Microsoft tablets from the last decade.

How do you think iBooks stacks up to the Kindle app?
details
I've been doing most of my e-book reading via the Amazon Kindle app. Partly, because my girlfriend shares her library with me, and the selection is normally better. That said, I've been interested in diving into iBooks, but the two impressions I've had with it so far have left me less than impressed. The first was right after the iPad came out. I purchased "Ender's Game" and began reading it. However, the book was strewn with typos and encoding issues. Namely, any... Read more →

I'm seeing a lot more people carting around elaborately cased iPads with an Apple keyboard.
details
One I met in a meeting enthused to me that "it's such a lightweight replacement for a laptop, really. I love it", while struggling to arrange his case in the proper prop-up position. My Sony Z11 for a purely idle comparison is 1400g. 710g iPad + 350g Apple keyboard + ~200g case = hmmmm. I like the iPad as an entertainment device, but as I said to the guy - I'm not in the habit of digging for potatoes using a stick of celery. He looked confused.

Are either the ipad(not sure if it got college text books yet or was just rumored too) or the kindle DX a good replacement or compliment to college text books?
details
I'll be commuting to college(NJIT, Majoring in Computer Science) and having most of my books in an ipad or kindle would be great. Also eBooks are cheaper most of the time. So has anyone used either device as a college text book and how was the experience?

Jakob Nielsen conducted a usability study comparing reading experiences on the iPad (iBooks), Kindle, PC, and printed book.
details
The results (presented in both speed and satisfaction) are pretty interesting. Granted, it's not a massive survey with hundreds of data points, but people didn't seem as attached to books as I might have expected: "After using each device, we asked users to rate their satisfaction on a 1–7 scale, with 7 being the best score. iPad, Kindle, and the printed book all scored fairly high at 5.8, 5.7, and 5.6, respectively. The PC, however, scored an abysmal 3.6." More here:...

Thanks to using iPhone 4/ iOS 4 the past few days, I've enjoyed using my iPad less.
details
The fast app switching, multitasking, and folders of iOS 4 plus the retina display on the iPhone 4 have left my enthusiasm for using my iPad lacking. Granted, it's still much easier for me to read longer material on the iPad than it is for my phone, but I can't help but yearn for the sharp, crisp text that I see on the iPhone. It's interesting. I think Apple is really going to have to step up their game in terms of the iPad when they release the next version. A retina display... Read more →

Nook, kindle, or ipad? Get the nook. I was torn between the three devices.
details
I'm an avid reader so ruling out the ipad was an easy decision since it is pretty much as uncomfortable as reading a book on my laptop. Although it can do many things other than display books, the screen will hurt your eyes after a while. The e ink screen is amazing. So, i chose the nook and here are some reasons to consider if you can't decide either. 1) Books: not only do you have a choice from the ones barnes & noble offers, but you also get access to free books from google... I'm cleaning out my gdgt want list of e-book readers after purchasing the iPad.
details
It's crazy. Since I've owned the iPad, my desire for any sort of e-book reader has pretty much disappeared. I know the contrast and sharpness of e-book readers cannot be beat, but I'm perfectly happy reading books on the iPad. Kind of a crazy reflection how one device basically eliminated my desire for 5 other devices I had my eye on over the past year. Anyone else experience this?

I just got the iPad camera connection kit, after ordering it about a month ago and I can 100% confirm that it works with USB headsets with audio working both…

ways and USB keyboards. It also doesn't look like an app needs to explicitly have code to be able to use said devices, since I tested in multiple applications even iPhone ones and so far all have worked with the keyboard. I've only tested the USB audio with Skype, which is an iPhone app. With this, I have to say it's a bit awkward to use the iPad with a keyboard, since you'll be interrupted when typing when you see that you have to touch the screen to select buttons and menu... I've been thinking about coughing up ten bucks for Air Display - - and have a question I can't find a good answer to.
details
I've been thinking about coughing up ten bucks for Air Display - http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/air-display/id36815... - and have a question I can't find a good answer to. It looks like it works pretty well as a secondary display, but will it work as a 3rd or 4th display in a multimonitor setup? I have two 24-inch monitors and would like to be able to use the iPad as a 3rd display for glanceable data. Anyone out there gotten it working with multiple displays?
