It's well-established by now that Amazon doesn't make any money from selling tablets. Instead their model is to break-even on the hardware and make money by selling access to content and services (which is partly why we described the Kindle Fire HD as being more of a "content appliance" than a proper tablet). While it's a different approach than that of pretty much every other hardware maker, it is a relatively straightforward strategy. However I think there's an even more subtle aspect to it...

You better be. Here's the thing: Most of us can not afford to pay 500 dollars for a toy. But we can afford to pay 199. That's why the Fire outsold the iPad over Christmas. Granted, Apple's business model doesn't require market share. You could say the very brief smartphone and current tablet market domination were just gravy for them. But already, Android has taken 40 percent of the world tablet market in less than six months with some admittedly clumsy products. Understand that even smartphones...

There seems to be a lot of unfounded speculation that Apple is suddenly going to go back on their stance and make an iPad Mini. It will never happen. I'll explain why. 1) Since Apple was lazy in their design and just kept duplicating their original iPhone screen dimensions in their code, an iPad 7" tablet would also have to be 4:3, and have to be some multiple of the "iOS math" pixel count. As it stands now, viewing HD video on a 10" iPad is identical to viewing it on a proper 16:10 HD Display...

Microsoft, when they unveiled their tablets today, created an entirely new market, or rather, reinvented an old market. Now, they are in a position that could allow them to dominate the tablet space in a few short years. If you don't believe me, read on... Unlike rival tablets, such as the many Android variants, the BlackBerry PlayBook, which I think is an excellent tablet, but I digress; and others that compete with the iPad, Microsoft has the potential to bring to market a ready made success....

A couple months ago I posted a question asking for suggestions on the best capacitive pen / stylus for iPad. The consensus seemed to be that Adonit's Jot products were worth checking out: http://gdgt.com/question/what-s-the-best-capacitive-pen-stylus-for-ipad-17rn/ I've been playing around with them and I can definitely tell you they pretty much nail exactly what I was looking for: light, easy to hold and grip, excellent for everything from basic use to fine detail work, and (thanks to the clear...

Asked by The Daily Telegraph which one Apple product he would like to be remembered by, Apple head of design Sir Jony Ive replied : “It’s a really tough one. A lot does seem to come back to the fact that what we’re working on now feels like the most important and the best work we’ve done, and so it would be what we’re working on right now, which of course I can’t tell you about.” What could Sir Jony and Apple be possibly working on? Share your ideas with the gdgt community here! You...

Why do I have to enter my password on my iPad several times while I use my wifi at home? It would happen when I am in the middle of writing emails or while I am reading websites.
Historically, the iPad has had 6 models - three different storage options (16, 32, 64) for WiFi only and three for WiFi + 3G. With the introduction of iCloud and especially the iTunes component of iCloud, will Apple just continue making models with the same amounts of storage space (maintaining the 16 GB base model would be cheaper for Apple)? Or will they bump the storage sizes to 32, 64, and 128? My main concern is this - While music and other media files can be stored in the cloud, many apps...

When I first got my iPad 1, it was a great device. But now, after the iPad 2 and OS updates, it's starting to show its age. Now the A4 chip is a great chip, and still is. But now everytime I browse to a page like theverge, even as a single page (no multiple pages on tabs), safari would crash. I see countless low memory logs on the diagnostic queue. Switching apps is sluggish. Even worse, iBooks. Loading takes forever, and loading a book can crash the app easily. Funny thing is, my iPhone 4,...

The US Copyright Office in 2010, stated Jailbreaking iOS devices is legal. Now this exemption is running out. I would like to hear what you think about rooting or jailbreaking. I'm doing some research of my own and want any information, whether you oppose Jailbreaking/Rooting or you're in favor, I want to know. Please be as detailed as possible when replying, so that your comment is not misconstrued.
A number of sources are speculating that the new iPad 3, which is expected to be announced within the next two months, could possibly see an increase in resolution, a new processor, thinner and lighter design, and an improved camera.
What do you think the next iPad will look like? What changes would you like to see most?
We are having problems getting our calendars to sync. Data will be entered into the calendar and it is supposed to automatically sync to our other devices via icloud. So far, it is syncing the other information (address book, notes etc), just not the calendar. The Apple salseman thinks it has to do with a setting in our firewalls and says we will need to call the IT guys out here to adjust the firewalls. He says this will have to be done every time we add a new device. Is he just trying to get...
After posting about user satisfaction with regard to the Kindle Tablet earlier today (see: http://gdgt.com/question/do-you-still-like-your-am... I decided to take a quick look at the top rated tablets on gdgt (based on a minimum of 5 user reviews). Here are the top rated tablets as of December 12th, 2011 (Reviews are based on a 0 - 5 point scale).
Hey guys, I'm looking for recommendations for a good combo for my iPad of a stylus + PDF annotation app. I am looking for a combo that will let me efficiently and comfortably enter handwritten notes on PDFs. Any ideas? I must say that I have already seen several styluses which didn't seem good enough for accurate handwriting (I want to carefully write notes on top of a PDF - not just write some free form text), so I'm wondering if it's even a realistic expectation from the iPad...
Hello. I would like to know if it is possible... well it probably is, but is it possible to efficiently take notes in class with an ipad. I know you can get one of those bluetooth keyboards which might help, but I'm an engineering student. I have to deal with writing greek letters and other symbols plus drawing circuit symbols, graphs, etc. My instincts tell me this is just not gonna work; wishful thinking. But there's a whole world of techies on gdgt! I hate paper because I can never keep myself...
