What are your WWDC 2013 Predictions
details
WWDC is just hours away, and there has been no shortage of rumors about what Apple has planned, especially for iOS. It seems like ever since the news broke about Scott Forstall leaving the company (1) and Jony Ive stepping in, there have been expectations of a major iOS redesign. This became even more clear when Apple updated their podcast app on iOS to a much more modern design (2). As the weeks and days have gone on more mockups and rumors kept swirling about a redesign, with even this years... Read more →

Connecting Jawbone UP to your Devices?
details
So I just bought a Jawbone UP. I tried to connect it to my HTC One X, but it wouldn't connect on Android 4.1. I thought there was something wrong with the UP, but it worked just fine when connected on my iPad 4.

Anyone else have experience with connecting the UP band to other Android devices? How has your experience been?

Is the iPad mini a PC? No, it's a supercomputer!
details
http://media.gdgt.com/img/products/473/a5di/a5di-460.jpg
According to a new report, Apple is now the world's top PC maker -- if you count the iPad as a PC. The report, from Canalys, says that Apple has a 20% share of the global PC market, having shipped 27 million computers during the 4th quarter of 2012 -- with iPads accounting for 22.9 million of those "computers."
With computer companies struggling amid competition from tablets, and even Apple seeing its high-flying stock come down to Earth as... Read more →

gdgt Zeitgeist 2012, Part I: Best and Worst of the Year
details
http://media.gdgt.com/img/products/473/a5e3/a5e3-460.jpg
Over the past year, we’ve scored well over a thousand gadgets. Most of those are good products, with gdgt Scores in the mid 70s to low 80s. These are gadgets you aren’t likely to be disappointed with if you get them, but they’re not likely to wow you either. But we also scored some truly great devices, with scores in the upper 80s and 90s, as well as some that were just awful, with scores as low as 50. As with all of the products we... Read more →

details
If your parents got a new tablet for Christmas, what apps are you installing for them? I realized many of my favorite apps wouldn't be useful for them, but I have installed the following:

  • YouTube
  • Pandora (or Slacker Radio if your in Canada)
  • Facebook
And if your on Android, i felt the following widgets would be handy:
  • weather widget
  • bookmarks widget
  • google search widget

Cell Phone Data Connection
details
How often do you use the cell phone data connection on your iPad, or does WiFi suffice. I am trying to decide which model to get and could benefit from some feedback on how often this comes into play for other people.

As of now I see the iPad as being primarily a game device and possibly a minor use as a software appliance (omni plan / omni focus).

Thanks in advance,

iPad mini or iPad 4
details
Hey everyone,
I'm a techie that has yet to indulge in a tablet, my parents have been through a few iPad's and swear by them. I've been an iPhone user for a few years now and I am reasonably committed to the app space, but I cannot for the life of me decide between the mini or the updated retina display. I've gotten used to 'retina land' on my iPhone but I really like the mini's form factor. I'm not looking to get an LTE radio because I really don't think I would tote it around all that much --... Kids want iPads this holiday season
details
According to a new Nielsen survey, the iPad is the most-wanted gift among kids aged 6-12, followed by the Wii U. Kids also want the iPod touch, iPhone, Kinect, and computers. What don't kids want? Non-smartphones, Surface tablets, and the Apple TV. Teens and adults also want iPads, though computers, smart TVs and non-iPad tablets are also high on their lists. What gear are you considering for the kids (and adults) on your gift list this holiday season?... Read more →

The wait for Google Maps to return to iOS may have just gotten a whole lot easier. No, GMaps isn't in the App Store yet. But Nokia's HERE Maps is, and it brings a highly detailed global mapping system to the iPhone and iPad, including live traffic, public transportation info, offline maps, and turn-by-turn navigation. It's not a complete replacement for Google Maps, and... Read more →

Is it time to consider buying a Chromebook?
details
http://media.gdgt.com/img/products/474/a67z/a67z-460.jpg
When the first Chromebooks came out, they were overpriced, and ran an early version of Google's Chrome OS that was almost useless without an internet connection. However, Chrome has improved dramatically, and now allows offline access to locally stored documents and media files. More significantly, hardware prices have dropped dramatically. Samsung's recently released Chromebook sells for just $249, includes USB 3.0 and HDMI ports, and... Read more →

Which tablet will dominate sales this holiday season?
details
http://media.gdgt.com/img/products/473/a5di/a5di-460.jpg
This holiday season is shaping up to be an epic battle for tablet manufacturers, with Apple's 4th-gen iPad and iPad mini competing against the Asus Nexus 7 and Samsung Nexus 10, Amazon's Kindle Fire HD, Barnes & Noble's Nook HD, and Microsoft's Surface RT, among others. With so many options, including some good tablets for under $200, will Apple be able to retain its market supremacy -- and if you're in the market for a tablet right... Read more →

Perceived Bias: GDGT Score
details
Rather than just complain about the numbers I decided to actually read the first 5 reviews of the Apple iPad Gen 4, Gen 3, iPad Mini, Samsung Nexus 10, Asus Nexus 7, and Kindle Paperwhite. Then I looked at the Reviews FAQ that Ryan Block posted to determine how gdgt assessed the gdgt score. I see that the Critic reviews do not tie into the gdgt scoring system (or if they do, I cannot look at the score, but rather am directed to the site of the Critic). I also see that the score is not based on a... Read more →

Senior VP of iOS Scott Forstall is out at Apple: why, and what it means.
details
http://images.apple.com/pr/bios/images/forstall_hero20110204.png
Most people don't know who Scott Forstall is. But to those who do, he's something of a demigod. If the future of mobile is software, and Apple is the company in pole position, then Forstall, Senior VP of iOS, is arguably the guy driving and defining the future. And as of today, he's officially out at Apple.
But don't panic, this is actually probably going to be a very good thing. Here's why:
  • After Steve's death, Forstall was known to...

Why do the hardware specs matter?
details
I have read a lot of reviews and discussions where they are comparing the specs of a device against another. There have been lots of comparisons of late of the iPad, Surface tablet and Nexus 7. Does it really matter what their hardware is when you are comparing devices designed for different operating systems?
The iPad 3rd gen has a dual core processor and only 512 GB of ram and the New surface tablet has a quad core processor with 2 GB of ram and they are both are comparably fast and responsive... Read more →
