One industry expert thinks Apple is about to launch its own mobile service, and cut out those pesky carriers and their bothersome contract terms. Of course, in order to do so, Apple would still need to cut deals with carriers to operate on their networks, becoming a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), much like Virgin Mobile, which runs on Sprint's network in the US. Still, being a carrier, even a virtual one, would allow Apple to do things like sell data plans via the iTunes store, and more...

The New iPad
What are all of your guys thoughts on the "New" iPad? Worth upgrading from the iPad 2?
by natemcintyre
What iPad 2 owners will be upgrading to the new iPad and why?
I currently own the 3G iPad 2 and have been amazingly impressed with just how useful I have found the device. With most of the new features on the "new iPad" being minor changes or simple refresh updates, I am wondering who here on gdgt is planning on upgrading to the "new iPad" even though they may currently own an iPad 2 already. If you are planning on upgrading, let us know what pushed you to do so.

How do you feel about Apple possibly abandoning the 30-pin dock connector?
Today's Apple rumor is that they're going to be abandoning the 30-pin dock connector that's been on iPods, iPhones, and iPads for years now, in favor of a smaller connector.
Personally I think it certainly makes sense, though I'm sure there will be a few people who are upset or frustrated that the accessories they've invested in might not work (though presumably there would be some kind of an adapter). Those ports have stayed the same size -- while iPods and iPhones have gotten smaller -- and at... Read more →

Did iMessage usher in the beginning of true synergy??
Earlier this week Apple announced the arrival of their new OSX build called Mountain Lion. One of their heralded new features was the introduction of iMessage to the desktop platform with the idea being simple: 1 conversation continued across any of Apple's hardware be it iPod touch, iPad, or iPhone, with iMessage you will never stop the conversation.
I myself downloaded the beta of iMessage and tested this out first hand, I had my iPad, iPhone, and MacBook Pro in front of me as I carried on in... Read more →

WSJ is reporting that Apple is testing an 8" iPad, thoughts?

if they do this, and price it right, it would help them gain even more marke share in the tablet market. They have a lot to compete with in the lower priced market since the Fire came out. They are still wining the tablet market overall but with two budget friendly devices (Fire and Nook Tablet) picking up a bit of steam there is still a small segment for them to overtake. What will the internal storage options be for the next iPad?
Historically, the iPad has had 6 models - three different storage options (16, 32, 64) for WiFi only and three for WiFi + 3G. With the introduction of iCloud and especially the iTunes component of iCloud, will Apple just continue making models with the same amounts of storage space (maintaining the 16 GB base model would be cheaper for Apple)? Or will they bump the storage sizes to 32, 64, and 128?
My main concern is this - While music and other media files can be stored in the cloud, many apps... Read more →

Do you think individuals should be allowed to Root/Jailbreak?
The US Copyright Office in 2010, stated Jailbreaking iOS devices is legal. Now this exemption is running out. I would like to hear what you think about rooting or jailbreaking. I'm doing some research of my own and want any information, whether you oppose Jailbreaking/Rooting or you're in favor, I want to know. Please be as detailed as possible when replying, so that your comment is not misconstrued.

Is there really Lack of honeycomb Apps? (as asked by an Ipad 2 owner)
All those people that have an Android Honeycomb/Icecream Sandwich tablet ... When you complain that there is a lack of apps, what do you mean?
Do you mean:
1. The existing apps just crash?
2. The apps you run don't have the options icon on the top right?
3. The apps don't look right on a larger screen?
4. Or some other meaning?
I bought an old Xoom for cheap to try out ICS when it comes out, and it has TONS of apps! Almost everything in the market works! I got like 20 top quality games. In fact I'd... Read more →

Sending SMS to IPad
Hello to all
I've got a web based application where users register themself on the server in order to synchronise data like emails, contacts, notes, etc.
One step in the registration process is the verification of the device, so the user receives an sms containing a short code to his cell phone. The user has to enter this code into the webapplications form which will then compare the entered with the sent code..
The sms is sent through an sms Gateway with SMTP (e.g. 0795556677@smsgatway.local)..... Read more →

How do you like iCloud's PhotoStream?
I was wondering what you think of the rather new PhotoStream service. I've been using it quite a lot (or trying to) - and I don't like it very much so far. It simply doesn't work well for me most of the time. For example, last night i got back home from a two days trip and imported all my DSLR photos into iPhoto (about 200 RAW photos). These are supposed to "immediately appear on all my devices". About 15 hourse have passed since the import and only 70% of the photos appear in my PhotoStream (my...

Predictions for 2012
Seems like a worthwhile topic of discussion is predictions for 2012. I know a lot of podcast hosts are doing it around now since it gives them a podcast to drop in the hopper while they're off on vacation. Seems like there might be some worthwhile opinions on this forum, so maybe this'll catch a few comments.
I'd suggest:
- Make all your predictions in one post
- Comment on others predictions by replying to their post.
- Make your own predictions by replying to this root post.

The upcoming iPad 3
A number of sources are speculating that the new iPad 3, which is expected to be announced within the next two months, could possibly see an increase in resolution, a new processor, thinner and lighter design, and an improved camera.
What do you think the next iPad will look like? What changes would you like to see most?

LightPad to the rescue!
Boom, the versatility of a smartphone, no need to buy a smartphone and tablet to be a "road warrior." This is what I have been looking for in that you don't need a third device, you just have to be able to use your phone in conjunction with a peripheral that allows you to be more productive. This will be demoed at CES and is for sure purely a concept thing, my hope is that big... Read more →

Stylus+App Combo for PDF annotation on the iPad?
Hey guys, I'm looking for recommendations for a good combo for my iPad of a stylus + PDF annotation app. I am looking for a combo that will let me efficiently and comfortably enter handwritten notes on PDFs. Any ideas? I must say that I have already seen several styluses which didn't seem good enough for accurate handwriting (I want to carefully write notes on top of a PDF - not just write some free form text), so I'm wondering if it's even a realistic expectation from the iPad...
