Despite what you think right now, and despite the limitations Apple has put on some aspects of this device, what it says to the market is significant. The iPad is powerful, elegant, and largely unlike any computer you've ever used.

Conclusion: We like it
With its first iPad, Apple reinvented tablet computing, and created a new niche between the smartphone and the laptop. You may not need an iPad, but there's a very good chance you'll want one (though chances are you'll opt for a newer model).

One thing I can say about most Apple products, and certainly the iPad: There may be things it doesn't do, but what it does do, it does remarkably well. Aside from the limitations, there isn't a lot else to gripe about. And to my great surprise, you can actually get real work done with the iPad....
Read the full review →All in all, however, the iPad is an advance in making more-sophisticated computing possible via a simple touch interface on a slender, light device. Only time will tell if it’s a real challenger to the laptop and netbook.
Read the full review →The bottom line is that the iPad has been designed and built by a bunch of perfectionists. If you like the concept, you’ll love the machine.
Read the full review →The Apple iPad is the first affordable tablet computer worth owning, but it won't (yet) replace your laptop.
Read the full review →Whether or not the iPad becomes a smash hit right away, or if it takes time for this sort of device to be embraced by the public as a whole, that doesn’t change how strong a product it is. ... This is an impressive debut for an ambitious new product direction for Apple.
Read the full review →Apple looks set to shake up casual computing with a tablet that offers clever design and ease of use. But that streamlined approach may also be the iPad's weakness.
Read the full review →As a laptop replacement, we just don’t see it. Not yet, at least. Apple has built a product that is exemplary on a large scale: it’s what you’d expect to see in a Star-Trek future. It’s the computer Ender Wiggin used in the novel Ender’s Game—a science fiction classic.
Read the full review →It's the first device to substantially deliver on the promise made by the iPhone and, in some respects, the Newton. Both of these earlier Apple products gave us glimpses at what a real, usable, purpose-built tablet computer might one day look like, and the iPad ... gives us the complete picture.
Read the full review →Although it doesn't replace any of your existing devices, there are some things the iPad does much better than anything you might own today. Web browsing, photo viewing, reading email, any passive usage scenarios where you're primarily clicking on things and getting feedback, the iPad excels at.
Read the full review →With the iPhone you have the fact that it's also a phone that lets you make calls, it has a core purpose beyond the diversification, but with the iPad, it's an emotional luxury that will need feeding with content to keep you entertained and justify its existence.
Read the full review →Apple have taken core elements of the tablet/touch paradigm and made them work smoothly, and if that sounds underwhelming then you need to remember that it’s something Tablet PCs – although finding some niche and vertical success – have struggled to achieve over the past decade.
Read the full review →Unlike the original iPhone, Apple TV, and iPod touch, all of which we cautioned readers about in their earliest forms, Apple has done so much right with the first iteration of this device that it’s easy to look past the iPad’s issues and just enjoy everything it can do.
Read the full review →Portable computing - truly portable computing; effortlessly portable computing - is a simple concept, but don't underestimate what it has to offer. The iPad fits perfectly for some very specific activities that have become key to our digital lifestyles.
Read the full review →Apple has pretty much nailed it with this first iPad, though there's certainly room for improvement. Nearly three years after making a splash with the iPhone, Apple has delivered another impressive product that largely lives up to the hype.
Read the full review →One of my favorite things about being an early adopter is when I pick up a device more for the novelty than anything else and I'm completely surprised by how useful it turns out to be. I had this experience first with my first iPod, when I discovered podcasts. I had it again when I first...
Read the full review →Out of the Box One thing I have always liked about Apple products is that they are ready to go out of the box and that is the same even here with the iPad. Once you take it out of the box and hit the switch it immediatley powers on and then all you need to do is set it up. No inputting serial...
Read the full review →I have had my iPad since the Monday after it was launched and have had nothing but horror stories with the WiFi. The wifi on 7 different access points would freeze up ALL the time. I never could use any video streaming apps like ABC, Netflix, or YouTube. It would buffer for 30 seconds then...
Read the full review →I came to the iPad having already used an iPod touch since it was released, so I had a very clear idea of the uses and limitations I would be getting with the iPad. I suspect if you don't have a clear idea of how you're going to use it initially it may seem more like a toy and there...
Read the full review →I have less than 24 hours of iPad ownership under my belt. For much of that time my 12 year old nephew protected my iPad from me. Here's what I think after my first coffee, news, and cigarette on the deck morning with my iPad. The screen is amazing. It washes out in the sun but remains...
Read the full review →I don't know if there is a comparable product on the market now. I don't say that because the iPad is spectacular, I say that because the market is small at this point. You can say it can be compared to the Galaxy Tab, but that is 7 inches with camera's and even a phone. But in...
Read the full review →4.5/5.0. It is not that i don't like it (I do) it's just that I've been getting used to Android because of my phone and at some points i seem to miss some of Android's stuff like widgets, or a real notification bar. Also and this seems to be an issue with Google not Apple i...
Read the full review →I wasn't sure I'd buy one. Who needs a bigger iPhone? Well everyone could benefit from an iPad for sure. Larger screen is fantastic for reading loads of information (and a joy to read books on) and great for movies. My preferred leisure Internet device. App store is fantastic -- review...
Read the full review →I use the iPad primarily for light reading books and PDFs (hours at a time usually for school) and I don't have any kind of problem with eye strain. I realize that this can be a huge issue for some but for me it's far more comfortable to read on the iPad than it is to read on other...
