According to a new study, more than 70% of smartphone users spend almost nothing on apps, which means the remaining 30% are on the hook to keep the $20 billion app economy alive. As Engadget puts it: We know smartphone and tablet owners like to buy games. But if you go by a new ABI exploration of user habits, most of us aren't buying much of anything. More than 70 percent of the crowd spends little to nothing on mobile apps, dragging down the average of $14 spent per month among paying customers...

No one would question that smart phones have become ubiquitous in the modern age. People who barely understand how Microsoft Word works have fairly high-tech devices in their pockets, and while not everyone who owns a smart phone uses it to its full potential, they still use it. But what do they use it for? Take a look around a restaurant or a store, and you will see a significant percentage of the people there with their eyes glued to their phones. Are they dialing a number or checking their...

The Lumia 900 has been on the market for a few weeks now. I can't help but have noticed that a number of folks have picked one up. Out of you new owners, how many of you are new to Windows Phone? How do you like it?
What are you missing from the operating system you came from?
Do you miss the Notification Drawer?
How do you feel about Windows Phone's multi-tasking system?
It seems like much of the internet is atwitter (pun... intended?) with thoughts about Facebook's purchase of social photography application, Instagram.
The CEOs of both companies assured users today that the deal has no negative implications for the service, but many seem skeptical.
The iPad 3rd Gen has definitely been introduced with a bang. Obviously, there is nothing that can compare to the iPad atleast today. But do you people think. that with the Windows' structure, capabilities and ecosystem, tablets from other companies would have faster processors, displays or cameras?
Earlier this week Apple announced the arrival of their new OSX build called Mountain Lion. One of their heralded new features was the introduction of iMessage to the desktop platform with the idea being simple: 1 conversation continued across any of Apple's hardware be it iPod touch, iPad, or iPhone, with iMessage you will never stop the conversation. I myself downloaded the beta of iMessage and tested this out first hand, I had my iPad, iPhone, and MacBook Pro in front of me as I carried on in...

I have this idea in my head... I want a smartphone, but there are things I want that none of the OS's have. But I also want a solid phone that satisfies every need I could have. I want to make my own smartphone. But I don't want it just for me, I want it for everyone. So, my question to you, fellow gdgt-ers, is what is the perfect smartphone? Don't tell me one that is already out. I don't want to know why Android or iOS makes your phone great, I want specs such as screen size, processor speed...

Historically, the iPad has had 6 models - three different storage options (16, 32, 64) for WiFi only and three for WiFi + 3G. With the introduction of iCloud and especially the iTunes component of iCloud, will Apple just continue making models with the same amounts of storage space (maintaining the 16 GB base model would be cheaper for Apple)? Or will they bump the storage sizes to 32, 64, and 128? My main concern is this - While music and other media files can be stored in the cloud, many apps...

The US Copyright Office in 2010, stated Jailbreaking iOS devices is legal. Now this exemption is running out. I would like to hear what you think about rooting or jailbreaking. I'm doing some research of my own and want any information, whether you oppose Jailbreaking/Rooting or you're in favor, I want to know. Please be as detailed as possible when replying, so that your comment is not misconstrued.
I received a lot of thoughtful -- and because this is the internet, also some not so thoughtful -- responses to my piece last week proposing that RIM abandon its efforts to build its own mobile OS and instead adopt one of the other options out there, and I wanted to expand on some of what I wrote. First, I didn't make this argument because I dislike RIM. I have a lot of respect and admiration for what the company has accomplished. I first started using a BlackBerry back in 1999 and carried one...

Hello to all I've got a web based application where users register themself on the server in order to synchronise data like emails, contacts, notes, etc. One step in the registration process is the verification of the device, so the user receives an sms containing a short code to his cell phone. The user has to enter this code into the webapplications form which will then compare the entered with the sent code.. The sms is sent through an sms Gateway with SMTP (e.g. 0795556677@smsgatway.local).....

I just read this article on the NY Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/08/technology/micr... about how Windows Phone is critically a hit, but I think it's also a "hit" with consumers too. I have a Zune HD and I think it's the best media player on the market and always enjoyed using Windows Phone in the couple of instances where I got to test them out. I also know a few (very few) Windows Phone owners that love it and seen others been...

I was wondering what you think of the rather new PhotoStream service. I've been using it quite a lot (or trying to) - and I don't like it very much so far. It simply doesn't work well for me most of the time. For example, last night i got back home from a two days trip and imported all my DSLR photos into iPhoto (about 200 RAW photos). These are supposed to "immediately appear on all my devices". About 15 hourse have passed since the import and only 70% of the photos appear in my PhotoStream (my...

This is not a iOS vs Android vs WP7 vs ETC thread. As an iOS user, there are some things that really bug me about the operating system. They are minor things, but annoy me none-the-less, just wanted to see if I was alone. For instance, why can't I attach a file or photo or anything to an existing email thread? I know I can go to an app, for example GoodReader, and attach a file to a NEW message, but I can't tell you the number of the times I've been asked to send a message to an existing thread...

Platform wars Two crucial factors, interface and information management. The mastery of both is the winner. iOS started with the mastery of the interface by giving us a device which manages the music masterfully. This is where we live, where the human soul survives. Music is our spiritual expressions of our hopes and longings. The iPod gave us management of this in a sleek device and interface. Simple to use so it didn't get in the way of what people were really wanting, an easy and elegant...

This is pretty sweet! I'm an obsessive Scrobbler (that is to say, I love using apps that send what music I'm currently listening to to Last.FM). I don't keep much music on my phone, thanks to services like Rdio and Pandora, but there's still a basic playlist for emergencies. I cringe whenever I listen to it though, since there's no easy way for me to send that data back to Last.FM if I use the iPod / Music function on my iPhone. This is especially irksome now that I'm using iTunes Match -- my...
