http://images.apple.com/pr/bios/images/forstall_hero20110204.png Most people don't know who Scott Forstall is. But to those who do, he's something of a demigod. If the future of mobile is software, and Apple is the company in pole position, then Forstall, Senior VP of iOS, is arguably the guy driving and defining the future. And as of today, he's officially out at Apple. But don't panic, this is actually probably going to be a very good thing. Here's why:
Maybe I'm only saying this because the Zune HD never got the love it deserved, but Microsoft should come out with a Windows Phone-based competitor to the iPod touch (i.e. a smartphone without the phone part). Why? Because it would help establish Windows Phone as a viable platform. Challenging the iPod touch isn't going to tip the balance for Microsoft all on its own, but having one could make things a little easier (and it probably would not upset Microsoft's OEM partners as much as doing a...

This device looks awesome! Lower back pain is such an issue in everyday life that magnifies as one gets older. I really think devices like this can allow people to be more pain free and thus happier (later) in life! I realize this is the earliest version and so there will be many issues, but posture is a tough issue to tackle and I like this idea a lot. If executed well, creative ideas like this show that tech is forever improving daily life. Hopefully this can be interwoven or mixed into...

http://media.gdgt.com/img/product/1/iphone-1st-gen-2wu-640.jpg Five years ago today the original iPhone launched. I remember it very well -- partly because it seemed like half the staff of Engadget was crashing at my place for the initial US release. The hype was totally out of control considering the first iPhone was a $600 unsubsidized 2G device on a single US carrier. Still, it felt like the future. It WAS the future. I've used every subsequent model of iPhone every day since. A lot's happened...

After dedicating some time to the subject and also doing work for one of the big extended batteries brands out there, I'm trying to understand where the big blogs like Engadget or CNET stand when it comes to this topic. Personally I would not use an Android phone without an extended battery because it simply does not make sense to recharge it every 8 hours. So, 2-3 days on my Nexus S with 3900mAh battery really changed everything (hate the bulk though, but I hate low battery alert more than...

Been thinking about posting a thread like this every once in a while to check in on the latest in apps. So tell us, what are your favorite iOS apps these days? Here's how to post an app:
Check to see if the app you'd like to post is already posted. If so, just vote it up! No need to re-post it.
If it's not already up, post it alone (i.e. one app per post) for others to vote up. Feel free to explain why you like it so much, favorite features, etc.! Oh, and post a link if possible!
According to a new study, more than 70% of smartphone users spend almost nothing on apps, which means the remaining 30% are on the hook to keep the $20 billion app economy alive. As Engadget puts it: We know smartphone and tablet owners like to buy games. But if you go by a new ABI exploration of user habits, most of us aren't buying much of anything. More than 70 percent of the crowd spends little to nothing on mobile apps, dragging down the average of $14 spent per month among paying customers...

No one would question that smart phones have become ubiquitous in the modern age. People who barely understand how Microsoft Word works have fairly high-tech devices in their pockets, and while not everyone who owns a smart phone uses it to its full potential, they still use it. But what do they use it for? Take a look around a restaurant or a store, and you will see a significant percentage of the people there with their eyes glued to their phones. Are they dialing a number or checking their...

The Lumia 900 has been on the market for a few weeks now. I can't help but have noticed that a number of folks have picked one up. Out of you new owners, how many of you are new to Windows Phone? How do you like it?
What are you missing from the operating system you came from?
Do you miss the Notification Drawer?
How do you feel about Windows Phone's multi-tasking system?
It seems like much of the internet is atwitter (pun... intended?) with thoughts about Facebook's purchase of social photography application, Instagram.
The CEOs of both companies assured users today that the deal has no negative implications for the service, but many seem skeptical.
The iPad 3rd Gen has definitely been introduced with a bang. Obviously, there is nothing that can compare to the iPad atleast today. But do you people think. that with the Windows' structure, capabilities and ecosystem, tablets from other companies would have faster processors, displays or cameras?
Earlier this week Apple announced the arrival of their new OSX build called Mountain Lion. One of their heralded new features was the introduction of iMessage to the desktop platform with the idea being simple: 1 conversation continued across any of Apple's hardware be it iPod touch, iPad, or iPhone, with iMessage you will never stop the conversation. I myself downloaded the beta of iMessage and tested this out first hand, I had my iPad, iPhone, and MacBook Pro in front of me as I carried on in...

I have this idea in my head... I want a smartphone, but there are things I want that none of the OS's have. But I also want a solid phone that satisfies every need I could have. I want to make my own smartphone. But I don't want it just for me, I want it for everyone. So, my question to you, fellow gdgt-ers, is what is the perfect smartphone? Don't tell me one that is already out. I don't want to know why Android or iOS makes your phone great, I want specs such as screen size, processor speed...

Historically, the iPad has had 6 models - three different storage options (16, 32, 64) for WiFi only and three for WiFi + 3G. With the introduction of iCloud and especially the iTunes component of iCloud, will Apple just continue making models with the same amounts of storage space (maintaining the 16 GB base model would be cheaper for Apple)? Or will they bump the storage sizes to 32, 64, and 128? My main concern is this - While music and other media files can be stored in the cloud, many apps...

The US Copyright Office in 2010, stated Jailbreaking iOS devices is legal. Now this exemption is running out. I would like to hear what you think about rooting or jailbreaking. I'm doing some research of my own and want any information, whether you oppose Jailbreaking/Rooting or you're in favor, I want to know. Please be as detailed as possible when replying, so that your comment is not misconstrued.
I received a lot of thoughtful -- and because this is the internet, also some not so thoughtful -- responses to my piece last week proposing that RIM abandon its efforts to build its own mobile OS and instead adopt one of the other options out there, and I wanted to expand on some of what I wrote. First, I didn't make this argument because I dislike RIM. I have a lot of respect and admiration for what the company has accomplished. I first started using a BlackBerry back in 1999 and carried one...

Hello to all I've got a web based application where users register themself on the server in order to synchronise data like emails, contacts, notes, etc. One step in the registration process is the verification of the device, so the user receives an sms containing a short code to his cell phone. The user has to enter this code into the webapplications form which will then compare the entered with the sent code.. The sms is sent through an sms Gateway with SMTP (e.g. 0795556677@smsgatway.local).....
