Redesigning the Apple Remote
cross-posted from my blog: http://www.connor-g.com/?p=73
If Apple is really working on a television, then they've got a lot of room for improvement in one specific area: the remote. The remote is often the worst part of the TV. It's covered in buttons that most people never figure out how to use--a very un-Apple-like experience. But the remote that comes with the current Apple TV is far from perfect. Sure, it's simple, but it also makes scrolling through long lists a huge pain, and IR is not a... Read more →

For Apple, making a TV would be easy. It's changing TV that's hard.
This is an updated version of what I posted last week. Will appear in this week's gdgt newsletter. Go to gdgt.com/newsletter to subscribe.
I don't think anyone doubts that Apple could make a stunning HDTV. It'd look great, have an amazingly crisp screen, and sport a clean, intuitive interface with impressive features like Siri-powered voice control, access to tons of apps, and an HD FaceTime cam. It'd probably make every other HDTV on the market seem clunky by comparison.
That's the easy part. We... Read more →

Latest iOS 4.3.3 update for Apple TV adds streaming of purchased content.
Looks like some features of iCloud are starting to slowly roll out for those regular users without swanky developer accounts. Apple just pushed out the latest update for the Apple TV that adds Vimeo as a new service and also allows you to stream purchased content directly from the Apple TV (something that should have been available at launch). It's nice to see these updates still out, though I wish there'd be a little bit more of a push behind the Apple TV ("hobby" or not). Via:...

iOS 4.
3's ability for third party apps to stream audio and video to Apple TV finally has me thinking about replacing my old 1st-gen Apple TV with the new one. Just curious if anyone else was thinking about that? I like the idea of being able to beam anything I come across on my iPad up to the big screen with minimal effort.

Greenpois0n JB was easy as, XBMC is really giving this little box the power you wish it to have out of the boxxx. Loving it now.

Anybody think that Apple is going to have any aTV2 news to announce on Wednesday?
Can't really see them having an event *just* for the iPad 2 so there'll definitely be a "one more thing". Here's to hoping that we get apps.

With XBMC on this thing its killer!
the apple software its self is all a bit Meh

I have to say it's an ok box if you're desiring to get into or stay in the Apple ecosystem and have something that will work well in conjunction with…
your Mac and other i-things. You will also have to be satisfied with a maximum 720p resolution. I have to say, however, that I now prefer my Tivo Premiere as my preferred living room solution. The Tivo DVR software is the best available. It is very capable as my replacement Comcast DVR and it also downloads my video podcasts, it allows me to view YouTube content, it allows me to stream photos and iTunes content from my Mac, it can stream Pandora, Netflix, Amazon Unboxed and even Blockbuster....

Outside the US its hardly as valuable.
No netflix, ultra small collection of movies in Itunes which cost a fortune to rent (~5 usd) and almost only dubbed titles. Plus it doesnt go for 99usd but rather 160usd in france. So its ok but not great.

this might change my mind about getting one

I love my Apple TV, but it has taught me that we're not ready to have all our media in the cloud.
It can usually get through a 25 min television show, but longer content requires repeated buffering, and causes freezing/stuttering.

Well, I got bitten by the DNS issue and slow downloads on Apple TV.
I was using OpenDNS on my router and Apple TV was telling me it would take 12 - 16 hours to download a movie. Once I updated my DNS to use the 'crappy' Comcast servers, I got better downloads because of the known geo location of the Comcast DNS servers. I think Data centers need GPS like our mobile devices have. I work in the testing industry and too many times have I been bitten by incorrect 'location' data when that is used for IP routing...

Your thoughts on AirPlay after a few weeks of use?
I think it has the potential to be pretty seamless and awesome, but at the moment it is really finicky. I was sending audio from rdio and the iPod App and encountering constant drop outs over our wifi network (Apple TV, router, and iPad were all in the same room). Maybe this is why we're not seeing a lot of AirPlay supported devices and such on the market just yet -- it's not entirely reliable? In one case, iOS didn't even give me an option to send audio to the Apple TV via...

Why must this product stink so much? Why not include a DVR and apps?
if it did, it could take out Tivo and Roku

This might be useful for someone...
After changing my network topology, the Apple TV did not stream audio from my iPad. Videos and pictures streamed just fine, but no music. The iPod player app displayed the AirPlay icon, and I could switch to Apple TV, but the device remained silent. I found the solution in the Net. You need to reboot the Apple TV by holding down the Menu and Down buttons on your remote until the white light at the Apple TV flashes rapidly. After the reboot, the Apple TV played all media from my iPad just fine.

This piece appeared in the gdgt weekly newsletter.
Sign up for it here: http://gdgt.com/newsletter/ *** The past few months have been big ones for the future of television: the Boxee Box finally shipped, Hulu Plus rolled out of beta, the first Google TV boxes and TV sets came out, Apple rebooted Apple TV, and Netflix announced a streaming-only option. There's no denying that more and more households are canceling their cable or satellite in favor of getting their TV online, and while the numbers are still relatively small, it's...

I'm looking to cancel my cable tv subscription and moving to streaming from the internet. I was considering either Roku, Apple TV, or possible PS3.
My tv is rather old(CRT) and I was wondering if I would run into issues with these devices?
When using the iPhone Remote app to control Apple TV, there's a small "Option" button on the lower left corner in the Remote app screen.
I've tried to tap on it in many occasions, and it didn't seem to do anything other than causing the iPhone screen to "flash" a bit. Any tips?
