We recently saw a patch for the Kindle Touch which adds a lot of the new features that were introduced in the Paperwhite. I remember a similar thing happening with the 4th-gen Kindle and Kindle Keyboard, where the new features shipped with the 4th-gen Kindle were added to the Keyboard, but quite a few months later. I'm skeptical that it takes them this long to prepare these new features for older devices. And even if it did, they could be working on these patches at the same time as they're...

So it's looking more and more like Amazon is doing a smartphone. I don't have any inside info, but there have been enough credible reports about it lately that I don't have much doubt that they're working on something. And if they're not building a smartphone they should be. In fact, they'd be crazy not to. Why? Because Amazon is one of the few companies that has a credible shot at being a major player in mobile, and even if it's going to be tough, the stakes are so high that in many ways it'd be...

There's a rash of Google vs Amazon and Apple vs Samsung stories on the net lately, and while fun spirited reads creatively done, they all ignore some basic facts: 1) Google isn't a hardware company. They make their money off of search and ads and their ecosystem. Sure, they can play around and make a few handsets or tablets through awesome partners (like Asus. Same company that makes Apple's motherboards). 2) Amazon is restricting access to the Play Store on their reskinned Gingerbread devices,...

Just as the world is waiting for the next version of the Kindle Fire, Bloomberg has lit a fuse with a report that Amazon is going to come out with its own smartphone. According to the report, Amazon is working with Foxconn, the Chinese company that manufactures the iPhone (along with about 40% of all consumer electronics products). Bloomberg sees Amazon moving into smartphones in order to gain another platform for digital content distribution....

Although I haven't looked at the numbers myself, hearsay indicates that the gaming industry is really in a slump--which is only offset by the repurposing of consoles as all-encompassing home entertainment devices. A good friend made a valid note which clarifies an argument that has never been clearly expressed by those attempting to make it: while mobile gaming isn't 1:1 competitive in quality and depth, it's scratching an itch that's never been satiated before. Such casual gaming is taking the...

I have a simple feature request for Hulu, Netflix, and all of the other online video services out there: let us cache programming for offline viewing. I know I can't be the only one out there who'd love to be able to load up my phone or tablet with a few hours of movies and shows before getting on airplane, or just to be able to watch something while I'm out of the house without having to worry about chewing up my battery by pulling down all that data over 4G. We've already seen streaming services...

About six months ago I asked gdgt users whether they preferred streaming services like Spotify, RDIO, and Rhapsody, or locker services like Google Music and Amazon Cloud Player (http://gdgt.com/question/poll-music-lockers-or-st... I'm not holding out hope that someone will combine the two in any meaningful way (i.e. a service where I can stream anything from their catalog and also upload any music of mine that's missing), so what I really want is something...

My daughter recently acquired a new iPod touch. As she was enthusiastically going through the process of adding music, videos, apps, and photos to her device, she asked me a question that has lingered with me and one which I think merits sharing with my gdgt community. Her question was "How come there are two different stores on my iPod?" She pointed out that while on the computer all available content can be downloaded from the iTunes application, on iOS she has to go to the iTunes application...

Here we go again! According to VentureBeat, Amazon is currently in negotiations with HP to snap up the former webOS Global Business Unit. http://venturebeat.com/2011/09/29/amazon-buy-palm/ I've always wondered if Amazon would be at all interested in webOS as they continue to ship their own devices — especially with former Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein serving on their board. I think Amazon has proven that they're quite capable of producing their own hardware, software, and ecosystem, so I'm not exactly...

Yesterday Ryan reported that a better Kindle Fire is slated to come out in Q1 2012. Here is his post: http://gdgt.com/discuss/oh-one-more-thing-about-th... I must admit that the Kindle Fire announced today looks more impressive than I anticipated. So what will you do? Is the current Kindle Fire good enough to end up in your holiday list this Christmas? Or will you wait until early next year to see what Amazon brings us...

Peter recently mentioned that he was invited to an Amazon press event in New York next week and asked for your predictions about their new tablet (http://gdgt.com/question/looks-like-amazon-is-announcing-its-tablet-next-week-any-predictions-g7a/). This morning, the New York Times published a piece on Amazon's new tablet, Anticipated Amazon Tablet to Take Aim at Apple iPad. The article highlighted some of the differences in strategies and why this tablet matters: The competition will be...

Remember the news earlier this year that Apple threatened publishers to remove links in their apps that allowed people to purchase content from non-Apple sanctioned stores? It looks like Amazon blinked and updated the Kindle iOS app. Now, if you want to purchase a Kindle book, you have to manually open Safari and navigate to the Kindle store. Also, there's no way to buy books within the app using your Apple ID. Nor is there any mention of how to buy books. For new users coming to the app, this...

Amazon announced that they'll begin selling a cheaper version of their popular Kindle that displays ads on the devices screen when it is not in use. This Kindle will be sold at $114 (as opposed to $139 for the non-ad wifi only version). What do you think? Would this push you over the edge to get one? More info: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news/2011/04/amazon...
My kindle ran really low on battery and went dead. The screen is now displaying a power bolt and USB icon. I have connected it to multiple ports but it wont power up, neither is it resetting or rebooting.
I need to partition my financial assets to buy one of these three products. I am currently using a Lumia 900. I do not have a tablet. I am also very fond of the literary arts and reading. Right now I am leaning towards the Kindle, although I may consider one of the other two. What do you think?
I bought a Kindle Fire back in December, and fell in love. I loved reading and the web capabilities. But the flame has slowly been burning out, and I have been considering selling the tablet on eBay. I really don't want to have that happen. Aside from the casual web browsing, reading and Netflix, I am bored. I need some ideas of how to spice up this tablet-user relationship again.
We have a television, and a high speed internet connection, but because of some conflicts with a cable provider we have decided to forgo cable or satellite television. So now we're looking into what the best way to get television content is. We have a very basic HDTV, nothing special. I'm not really a fan of smart TVs because they lack longevity, so I'd like to stick with a device that can stream television content to our TV. What device would be best for that? We have a Netflix account, so it...

Can someone help me?? My kindle 3's screen appears off, but when I try to turn it on, it doesn't. I tried the 15 second reset but it didn't work. I know that the battery is fully charged because the green light appears and just in case, I left it charging a whole day anyway.
I just got a Kindle Touch and it seems fantastic, but I'd like a little more protection for that gorgeous screen. I'd love for something along the lines of the iPad 2's smart cover, which doesn't add much bulk to the device itself but still guards the tablet well.
Any recommendations? Amazon's leather lighted cover seems nice, but it's way more expensive than I'd hoped.
I've been thinking about getting my own Amazon Prime account so I can take advantage of Amazon's VOD service. I was just wondering how the library, quality and speed was comparative to other streaming services?
One of the reasons I've enjoyed purchasing music from Amazon is because I get actual MP3's. However, I seem to recall that in the past, they wouldn't remember past purchases. So, if you're hard drive crashes and takes your hard earned music with you, so long! This is something that is really interesting about iTunes and iTunes Match. Knowing that I'll have instant access to all my past purchases on all my Apple devices. That said, I prefer Amazon since they actually provide MP3s. Anyway, does...
I have installed the Kindle for iOS App on my iPad and my iPhone, I recently purchased some books from Amazon and delivered it to my iPad. But the iPhone doesn't have those books on it, despite having registered all the devices under my name?
Is there a limit on the number of devices (i.e. Kindles, iOS devices, Computers) that content purchased from a single Amazon account can be used on? Something on the lines of iTunes which allows you a maximum of 10 devices (maximum 5 computers) to use content from a single account?
I am interested in buying a tablet for watching video, playing games and web browsing. The Kindle Fire looks like an interesting product. Although I love Apple products, I do not want to shell out for an iPad, already owning an iPod Touch and a MacBook. Questions: - Will the tablet even work in Europe? - Could I buy content for it via the Amazon store? - If not, could I put my own media content on it?
After the presentation of new Kindle serie ereaders I am thinking about which ereader I should buy. I am considering mainly format support, price and usability outside US as I live in Brazil. Is ePub format support a killing feature or may I consider the format conversion an easy option? Does Kobo and Nook work outside US?
The Kindle Fire data page on amazon.com says that there is an email application on the device:
"Stay in touch using our built-in email app that gets your webmail (Gmail, Yahoo!, Hotmail, AOL etc.) into a single inbox. Import your messages and contact lists from other email accounts. Additional email apps are available in our Amazon Appstore for Android."
Is this the only productivity app included? Or are there also calendar and note taking apps?
Is it possible to side-load content into the Kindle Fire? Can one download an .apk from the Google Marketplace and install it via side-load? What about movies, music, and pictures?
So the basic Kindle can now be acquired for as little as $79. It doesn't have a touchscreen and it doesn't have a keyboard. How exactly does one interact with this thing? I'm sure flipping pages can be done easily with back/forward buttons, but how do I search for a book I want to download? Does it have a TiVo-like text input experience?
I was looking at a few items on Amazon and a couple of items caught my eye. They were "AmazonBasics" products that included SD cards, wall mounts, HDMI cables, etc. I mean I trust Amazon as a seller, but what about as a product manufacturer. Or are they just rebranding items from another company?
If you have bought one of the products, what do you think of their quality? Is it worth the money to invest in them?
Besides what's already been revealed on TechCrunch and elsewhere, of course. One of my guesses is that they'll offer really crazy daily deals that you'll only be able to buy through the tablet.
If the rumors are true, amazon would release a a 7-inch tablet with a capacitive touch screen by November. It would be running android and the users could be able to use the Amazon App Store on it to load their devices with the tons of content they have to offer (Apps, Music, Video, Books)... Now, another rumor says the device could cost $250 to compete directly to B&N Nook Color and the other tablets around. Indeed a very competitive price, but the real question the guys at Amazon are...
http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/02/amazon-tablet-c... Engadget reports that Amazon's tablet will come out some time in November and will cost $250. It's also a 7inch tablet. Will you get one?
