Criteria Comments Rating
  • Display / readability With the upgraded resolution from previous generations, it's crisper than ever. great!
  • Battery life In my short time, its more than adequate even with the light on bright most of the time. Other reviews point to similar performance. great!
  • Store and selection of titles I do think Amazon has the best ecosystem, but I'd be nice if I was also able to not be pigeonholed. Not a big deal yet and Amazon has fair prices. good
  • Ease of use Straight forward. great!
  • Document support comes with a user guide built-in, and even gives you a nice walk-through when you first fire it up! great!
  • Storage capacity Look, I don't plan on having 1000 books on my Kindle that I'm actively reading at a time. So I'm perfectly fine with 2GB. I can always re-download or swap. great!
  • Durability I don't feel the need to "protect" it. It seems very well built and solid. great!
  • Design and form factor While it is touch, I do enjoy using the page turn buttons. The "holding" space for your thumb is smaller too. However, I love the feel of the back. good
  • Portability (size / weight) I can put this in my pocket. It is a bit heavier than the Keyboard, but far from unreasonable. great!
Detailed review
Upgraded from the Kindle Touch. Why I upgraded:
  • Frontlight
  • Capacitive Touchscreen (IR was wonky)
  • higher resolution
While that may not be enough for most folks, I'm quite happy with that decision. The Paperwhite should have been Amazon's first touch Kindle. Other improvements that surprised me:
  • The screen isn't as deep inset from the bezel, therefore less shadow. Sure it was a slight shadow on the Touch, but it did bother me from time-to-time. Its one of those things you can't "un-see".
  • I enjoy the lack of the home button. I found myself "playing" with it on my Touch.
  • The power button is a "tougher" click. Also a welcome addition. I'd accidentally touch the power button on my Touch.
The only thing that bothered me right away was the "slide to unlock". I'm sure I'll get used to it, but it was nice having to only click the power button to resume reading. For my own use, I'd power off the device when transferring trains, then simply clicking the power button to resume while I waited or got situated. Obviously a extremely small issue and may be limited to my own personal "workflow".

Overall, I love my new Kindle and look forward to each use. A worthy upgrade from any e-reader. If you've been waiting for a fantastic e-reader to buy, this one is definitely it.
