I'm confused about one aspect of Amazon's Kindle strategy
details
We recently saw a patch for the Kindle Touch which adds a lot of the new features that were introduced in the Paperwhite. I remember a similar thing happening with the 4th-gen Kindle and Kindle Keyboard, where the new features shipped with the 4th-gen Kindle were added to the Keyboard, but quite a few months later.
I'm skeptical that it takes them this long to prepare these new features for older devices. And even if it did, they could be working on these patches at the same time as they're... Read more →

Windows 8 and the Myth of the All-Purpose Device
details
With the release of Windows 8 and its ecosystem of hardware near at hand, I have been thinking about the ancient (in technology years) myth of the all-purpose device. This myth is one every geek knows and dreams of. The idea of having a single device that you carry around that can meet all of the technology needs you have is one that has captured the imagination since the days of the first "portable" computers. For geeks everywhere, though, it is ultimately a dream that leaves us depressed and... Read more →

Would you buy an Amazon smartphone?
details
Just as the world is waiting for the next version of the Kindle Fire, Bloomberg has lit a fuse with a report that Amazon is going to come out with its own smartphone. According to the report, Amazon is working with Foxconn, the Chinese company that manufactures the iPhone (along with about 40% of all consumer electronics products). Bloomberg sees Amazon moving into smartphones in order to gain another platform for digital content distribution.... Read more →

Bad user experience with book samples
details
Is it just me, or is the user experience when dealing with free samples on Kindles pretty terrible? I'm not sure if it's the same on the Fire, so let me know if it's different. But here's how it works on the e-ink Kindles.
You find a book in the store that you want the sample for, so you download it. Great. You read the sample and get to the end, and there's a link to the store to buy the full book. Great. This is where it starts going wrong. You now have both the sample and the full book on your... Read more →

Kindle: 3G or WiFi?
details
Before posing my question, let me note that I will be using my Kindle primarily as an e-reader... not for apps or surfing the web.
OK... I've pretty much decided on a Keyboard vs. a Touch (I don't like the KT's lag in turing a page, nor it's occasional ignoring a tap or interpreting one tap as multiple taps.). Now it's down to 3G vs. WiFi.
I like the thought of being able to download books anywhere, anytime - thus the appeal of 3G. But, how well does it really work? I see it's run through Sprint.... Read more →

Personal Document Archiving & Syncing
details
Did you guys notice that Amazon now supports archiving of the personal documents you send to your Kindle through your @kindle.com email? You have 5GB of cloud storage and it seems that you'll be able to recover personal archived content that you delete from your device, although for now this is not supported on the Kindle "3" (but people with the still unreleased firmware 3.3 claimed to have that working).
According to the Amazon pages, syncing page numbers and highlights (whispersync) from... Read more →

Switch off below 10,000 feet?
details
When flying, do you switch off your Kindle between take-off and 10,000 feet (when "all electronics should be switched off") and just before landing? I have tried to keep it on once and was alerted to switch it off by a flight attendant, didn't argue with her and just complied. I think that is still an advantage of paper books which I miss.

Does a cheaper, ad-supported Kindle interest you?
details
Amazon announced that they'll begin selling a cheaper version of their popular Kindle that displays ads on the devices screen when it is not in use. This Kindle will be sold at $114 (as opposed to $139 for the non-ad wifi only version). What do you think? Would this push you over the edge to get one? Apple to require Kindle ebooks as in-app purchases?
details
Sounds like Apple may have dropped a huge bomb on Amazon today. Sony was in a tizzy last night claiming their e-reader app was rejected by Apple (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/01/technology/01ap... ), and now according to The Loop (http://www.loopinsight.com/2011/02/01/apple-respo... ), Apple has stated that "We are now requiring that if an app offers customers the ability to purchase books outside of the app, that the same option is also available to... Frozen Kindle caused by defective non-lighted leather case
details
After some frustration with my 3rd-gen Kindle frequently freezing up and requiring a hardware reset, I dug around Amazon's customer forums and found that they've acknowledged a defect with the non-lighted leather case (http://goo.gl/eUzQG ). That case, by the way, is no longer available directly from Amazon (http://goo.gl/b37JZ ), most likely due to these problems. It appears there's an electrical issue which causes the Kindle to occasionally freeze, reset by itself, drain the... Read more →

Kindle books are now the most popular book format sold on Amazon!
details
They just released their Q4 financial results and had a pretty stellar quarter. $12.95 billion in revenue (their first $10+ billion quarter ever) and the Kindle is apparently selling like hotcakes! From the press release: • Amazon.com is now selling more Kindle books than paperback books. Since the beginning of the year, for every 100 paperback books Amazon has sold, the Company has sold 115 Kindle books. Additionally, during this same time period the Company has sold three times as many... Read more →
