Jakob Nielsen conducted a usability study comparing reading experiences on the iPad (iBooks), Kindle, PC, and printed book.
details
The results (presented in both speed and satisfaction) are pretty interesting. Granted, it's not a massive survey with hundreds of data points, but people didn't seem as attached to books as I might have expected: "After using each device, we asked users to rate their satisfaction on a 1–7 scale, with 7 being the best score. iPad, Kindle, and the printed book all scored fairly high at 5.8, 5.7, and 5.6, respectively. The PC, however, scored an abysmal 3.6." More here:...

Nook, kindle, or ipad? Get the nook. I was torn between the three devices.
details
I'm an avid reader so ruling out the ipad was an easy decision since it is pretty much as uncomfortable as reading a book on my laptop. Although it can do many things other than display books, the screen will hurt your eyes after a while. The e ink screen is amazing. So, i chose the nook and here are some reasons to consider if you can't decide either. 1) Books: not only do you have a choice from the ones barnes & noble offers, but you also get access to free books from google... Just spent the afternoon reading on the iPad, and I have to confess, I'm enjoying it much more than I anticipated, especially after my earlier post in…

favor of E Ink-based devices like the Kindle 2 ( http://gdgt.com/discuss/will-kindle-and-e-book-rea... ). The iPad as a reading device by no means perfect -- it's heavy, reflective, and sometimes a bit unwieldy. But between iBooks and the Kindle app (which are both very well done), Instapaper (big ups to the gdgt community on that: http://gdgt.com/discuss/possible-send-links-ipad-t... ), and the NYT Editors' Choice app, there is a lot to love, and as... Just ordered a Kindle 2...what do I need to know?
details
I broke my Sony reader (it turns out that taking things apart to see how they work isn't always a clever idea), so I panicked and immediately ordered a Kindle 2, which is the cheapest, easiest option for me in my country. It was either that or read on my phone, which is fine when I'm in the 'break room with the white seats' at work, but a dreadful thought overall, especially when I'm in the middle of a long, awesome sci-fi novel... It will arrive early next week, so I'd... Read more →

I recently received a Kindle 2 as a gift and I'm thoroughly enjoying but I have to say I'm getting a little overwhelmed by all the accessories as well as all the cover selections. Can anyone advise me on what might be considered a must have accessory? Also can you recommned a favorite Kindle 2 cover? Thanks!

Is Kindle 2 due for a refresh soon?
details
I would really like to wait until a Kindle 3 comes out before buying an ereader. With all the competition that has come out in the last few months, I wonder if Amazon is working overtime to come up with a hardware refresh. I suppose I would like either a new Kindle or a dramatic price drop. Things I'd like to see in a new Kindle *Get rid of the screen cracking/cover connector problem *A faster processor for faster book loads *True 300dpi equivalency (fantasy I know, probably won't happen... Instapaper - Anyone using it with their Kindle?
details
I'm already inclined to buy a Kindle, but saw that Instapaper improved its Kindle support the other day, which is something that makes getting one even more attractive to me now. Was wondering if anyone else on the site has been using Instapaper with their Kindle and how they like it and whether the new version is a significant improvement or not.

Will Kindle (and e-book readers) survive in a post-iPad world? I think so.
details
So I turned on my Kindle 2 for the first time since the iPad launch (hey, it's been a busy week!), and I have to say, the sheen hasn't been dulled. Yeah, the industrial design is still a little haphazard for my tastes, I still really dislike the directional stick, and the screen feels feels as small and limiting as ever. But damn it, E Ink still has the look and eye-feel of paper, and after spending the last few decades reading and working on a computer, I feel pretty confident that iPad... Read more →

Upgrade that Kindle firmware
details
I was pretty sure my Kindle firmware is out of date (running v2.0.3 - 327610024), and as it turns out, that was the case! Thankfully, Amazon's got a handy guide posted for kickstarting Kindle firmware updates if yours didn't get it over the air yet. It's here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.htm... The long and short is: download the file, put it in your Kindle's root directory, go to settings, and hit update kindle. Nice! Not so nice: it won't... Read more →

Great device nomatter what apple releases today.
details
As much as I love apple products from their routers, phones, to their laptops; there is just something about reading on and LCD screen that isn't a great book reading experience. In my opinion humble as it may be the Kindle will have a place in my gadget life forever because of the experience it offers. Though it is limited to reading black and white text. It delivers extremely well on its one function; being an e-reader! This device was made to read books not play farmville and watch the... Read more →

What's the big deal about E-Ink? Can't stand it
details
Not sure what all the rave is about E-Ink Displays. I just played with the kindle, and I really honestly don't like it. It's dull, people say it's easy on the eyes, but I really don't think so, and it does this weird blink whenever you turn the page. Sure you can read in the direct sunlight, but really, who want's to? I personally have been simply using stanza on the iphone, and can read my books at night with the lights turned out... am I missing something here?

Images in newspapers/magazines outside of the United States
details
I noticed when looking online at the Kindle edition of a UK newspaper it said underneath: "Newspapers and magazines delivered outside the U.S. will not include photos and other images." Does anyone here have an Amazon Kindle with an account based outside of the United States? Could they confirm that absolutely no images show up in the newspapers/magazines?
