Conclusion: We're mixed

Like the Asus VivoTab Smart, the Acer Iconia W510 is a Windows 8-powered laptop/tablet hybrid that sells for about $500 (without its optional keyboard). While the W510 is a sluggish performer compared to more expensive Windows 8 hybrids, its battery life is very good, and it's a better option than Windows RT models that sell for about the same price. As Laptop Mag says, the W510 is "a fairly attractive tablet that can double as a notebook, offering a design that makes it easy to change modes, plus a comfortable keyboard and very long battery life." However, adding the keyboard bumps the price up significantly, and as Wired puts it, "performance is beastly." As a Windows-based alternative to an Android tablet, the W510 could be worth considering; as a laptop replacement it is, as Wired says, "unsatisfactory."

Offering low-powered Intel Atom tablet/laptop hybrids for $750 or more is a dodgy proposition for budget-looking systems such as the Iconia W510, but all-day battery life is a great selling point.

In the end, eying those others might be a good idea--the W510 is a decent product, but it's not great and there's a lot of competition.

There are apps you aren't going to want to run on the W510's hardware, but the fact remains that this tablet will run your legacy Windows applications, and it will run them without sacrificing size or weight or battery life.

It’s all the more heartbreaking, then, that Acer’s Iconia W510 isn’t very good. As a tablet, it feels underpowered, unable to play even some basic games like Jetpack Joyride at consistently smooth framerates. As a laptop, it’s even worse.

Unfortunately, the keyboard won’t be for everyone due to its poor layout, and the touchpad is rather stiff. If you can live with these flaws and don’t mind the absence of a Wacom stylus, this hybrid comes recommended.

Usability is affected by the compromises of the keyboard layout, but the W510 makes up for it with a fine screen and a comfortable weight. It’s not the best productivity tool or the best media tablet, but it’s a solid general-purpose choice.

This Clover Trail Atom-powered convertible tablet PC is attractive and well-built, with extraordinary battery life when used with its keyboard base. It's good for business users with light computing (and long endurance) needs, but power users will want a better CPU and more RAM.
