Acer's $199 system certainly wins on price, but it looks and feels extremely cheap. It offers a fast processor along with Ethernet and VGA connectivity, but at the expense of a glossy screen, poor keyboard layout and lackluster battery life. Did we mention the sea of cheap plastics?

You won't find a cheaper laptop than the C7; Computer Shopper says it's "practically an impulse buy." But is it worth getting, even at its low price? According to Computer Shopper, the Google Chrome OS-based laptop could be, "for anyone considering a 7-inch tablet but hoping to do productivity work instead of mere content consumption on the Web." However, Chrome OS does have certain limitations compared to Windows or OS X, and SlashGear warns that "if you want the most full-featured computing experience you’ve ever laid your hands on, look elsewhere." Engadget points out that, with its relatively short battery life, slow hard drive and overall cheap feel, anyone looking for a Chromebook would likely be better off spending $50 more on Samsung's model, which is "more elegant, better built, thinner and lighter." But Engadget does point out that, with its upgradable RAM and hard drive, the C7 is "tinker-friendly." And users report being able to install Ubuntu and other OSes on it, making it the cheapest full-fledged laptop available, if you're prepared to put in a little unorthodox effort.

Chrome OS is still a bit of a tough sell, but the C7 and the ARM Chromebook are both cheap enough to finally make it palatable. Neither is an especially high-quality laptop, but at these price points they're a significant step up from the tiny, cheap netbooks.

Read the full review →The C7 is pretty much exactly what I expected it to be: A basic, no frills, incredibly cheap netbook-style laptop. At $199, it's a steal, and it runs Chrome OS very well. The added bonus with this one is that it has an Intel Celeron processor and 320GB HDD. While the HDD makes it a little slower...
